Dear Mel-o-Cream, Thank you…I guess. When I was a child, I lived on the north side of Springfield. Mel-o-Cream was our breakfast restaurant of choice. I learned very quickly that your chocolate long John was, quite simply, the best donut in the world. As an adult, I married and moved to Okinawa, Japan. My husband was Air Force. My neighbor just so happened to also be from Springfield. We were reminiscing once about the things we missed from home and she said, “You know what I miss the most, though?” Well, I knew what I missed most, and thought any sane person would answer In a likewise fashion, so I said, “Mel-o-Cream!” She immediately said, “YES!” I knew then she would always be a good frie...
The donuts here are incredible, and the staff is really friendly. Make sure to try the glazed old-fashioned— it's wonderfully soft on the inside with a crispy exterior and a rich, sweet flavor. The spiced donut holes are fantastic as well. Be sure to arrive early, as the most popular items tend to sell out by around 10 a.m.
If you're looking for a place where cleanliness is questionable, with staff that may not wash their hands properly and machines that seldom get cleaned, then you might consider getting your donuts here or at any other place in the city. Just pay attention to how they prepare everything.
