We innocently wandered into Salem on what turned out to be Hocus Pocus Day. Who knew? So I noted the lines for lunch stretching around the block, in the rain, at many eateries. I now understood the meaning of mercy as I arrived at this tavern, just before noon, snagged a spot on a fairly short line, and soon was comfortably seated at the bar where the full menu is served. (I should add that MT is close by the House of the Seven Gables, which is also a huge plus. Very nice selection of beers on tap. Attentive bartend. Comfy bar vibe. I will admit that the falafel is perhaps not the best I 've ever had. But I give them an A for effort, even though the falafel is served on top of, not inside, the pita, and is a bit on the mushy side. New England approach to falafel presentation, I guess. Deputy Yelper loved the delish clam chowder. All things being equal, Mercy Tavern is a 5, and we 'll be back.
