We dined at Nel with a group of five on a Tuesday night. The ambience of the room is warm in and inviting, although a little quirky - neither casual or romantic. After we were seated it took about 10 minutes for our waitress to take a drinks order, and she then returned (without our drinks) to explain the menu. This was a bit of a production, as the theme of Nel is the chef's food experiences in England during his upbringing, transformed into a menu that changes every six weeks or so. Our friends had booked with the degustation menu ($108pp), which comes with or without accompanying "wines" ($90pp). After reading the reviews and being recommended to try Nel by friends, my wife and I were looking forward to our evening at Nel. We arrived at the restaurant 8 minutes before our reservation and were advised that our table would not be ready for app 15 minutes - understandable as we were early. We were offered two seats near the reception where we could have a drink as the bar could only seat 4 guests and was full. We were handed drinks menus and asked to look through them and they would return to take our orders. Went for dinner tonight with friends. It was my second time and i recall having a lovely meal last time. Unfortunately, we were seated for a 6pm service and after we had waited more than half an hr to be served food - nothing came. The couple next to us who arrived after us was served 3 dished in the time we waited! It was hard to get service from our waitress. We will call her A. We asked when our dishes came and despite telling us she was going to look after us when she seated us, she had no idea we didn't have food. She went to check and did not come back to apologise but continued to serve others and only when we waved her down did she tell us food was coming. As you can imagine, late st...
I like the element of surprise, but too much of theater during the service of 8 very small plates of food could be a bit offputting in a way. The place is ok. The food is well prepared, flavors are fine, but not enough food to really appreciate the full flavor of the dish. If Ithe primary objective was to go to taste 8 different wines and those dishes were complementing/pairing the wines, maybe the experience could work, but we did go for dinner. Chefs have to think that they are feeding normal people, not birds, I think that some of those dishes did not have 40gr of food per serve. The only dish that we did find reasonable was the Duck. We went to Nel as a family party if 5. It seems parties of 6 or more pay a surcharge so we were lucky with that. One of our daughters eats gluten free lactose free and she received impressive service. They really paid attention to her many courses and at times we were envious of what she got! The degustation was excellent, food imaginative and tasty. A good night out which is what you want. We had the 6pm sitting on a Saturday and were moved to the bar for our coffees. Acceptable in the circumstances.We had a bottle of wine and a few cocktails, special truffle on one dish and with a modest tip it was $850. For a special occasion I would go back!
Nel is a very comfortable restaurant for a dating couple and maybe a few close friends. The lighting is very warm, and cosy.The degustation course was delicious, featuring seasonal ingredients and good balance of flavours. There wasn't exactly any stand out dishes, all were quite delicious. The only flaw was the marshmallow at the end, the fire didn't last long enough for a good photo hehe.We were able to get a early dinner booking at Nel the night before, so get in while it's still an underrated restaurant.
My wife and I went to Nels for our 2nd Wedding anniversary as we got married I the UK and wanted a UK themed meal for our anniversary. Nels was great and delivered on all fronts. We shared a wine pairing incase the wines weren't to our taste and discovered 2 new wines to add to our favourites list. Staff were attentive and helpful. Great evening, would reccomend it to anyone :-)
