When in France we would not normally choose to eat in an Italian restaurant but it was Sunday and not many were open. Afterwards we wished we had gone hungry! We arrived just after they opened and asked for a table for two. The waitress was curt, bordering on rude, and showed us to a raised table and we had to perch on ‘high chairs’ to use. Neither of us are in the first flush of youth and there were plenty of ordinary tables available. We were given menus and our drinks order was taken by a much more friendly waitress. We both ordered Veal Milanese. This was given to us remarkably quickly, well under five minutes, which seemed nowhere near enough time to prepare and cook such a dish. When I say “given” it was the first waitress again and she almost threw them at us. Initially we were only given one portion of pasta, a second arrived about 15 minutes later by which time we had almost finished. When eating them we both enjoyed them but then the problems began. I barely got back to the hotel and immediately had to rush to the toilet. By the time I came out I don’t think my body still had any of the meal in it. For my wife it took somewhat longer striking her during the night but with the same results. Due to the speed with which our meals came, the second portion of pasta coming so much later and their subsequent impact our suspicion was that our meals had been left over from dinner, reheated (inadequately) and then given to us. Fortunately by the time we got up the next morning the effects had passed and we were able to continue on our journey. Needless to say we skipped breakfast!
