Nyala African Restaurant has been a centrepiece of Melbourne's multicultural dining scene for twenty plus years. Any business with such longevity, undeniably has been both successful and honest. The menu has dishes from various parts the continent; there is Nigerian, Ethiopian, Kenyan, Somalian and Namibian delicacies. The restaurant is located one floor up from the iconic Brunswick Street and is situated in the middle of the busy dining precinct. As soon as you reach the top of the staircase you are focussed on the ambience and setting of the restaurant. You are greeted by the host and proprietor. As you proceed towards the bar and tables, he addresses you in a warm and welcoming manner which he has the biggest of smiles beaming across his face as he says welcome...The menu has many of options available that accommodate vegan, vegetarian, gluten intolerant and for those that indulge there is a plenty of meats, grills, curry and injera. Everything is delicious and tasty! Strong suggestions would be the combination of meats from various parts of the continent. The dips and mountain bread are a starter that has you excited. The Sambusa's are divine! The banquet's are reasonably priced and have a variety of options and serving sizes available. The bar is stocked with local and imported alcohol including beers from Africa. The service is good, the staff are very accommodating and serviceable and no the food! Cheers to a hearty feed by the people that treasure the time spent with family and friends eating the food they love!

I've eaten at Nyala several times and always enjoyed the food and the warm friendly atmosphere. The food is quite spicey but staff are on hand to offer advice and make any adjustments if necessary. My favourite dishes are the baboutie and the beg tibs. Instead of rice I usually opt for mohloul ( African mountain bread) which is very flat or another bread called injera which is slightly spongy. The restaurant is also BYO.

Lovely warm welcome, wonderful menu with interesting flavours. The service was efficient and the prices were reasonable. We loved the trio of meat and the banana dessert was yummy too. It seems a great place for a group of friends. My only issue is the bathrooms. They do need a make good over and sufficient toilet paper. These days a establishment needs to be good and look good in every aspect.

Went in last night as my first experience at an African restaurant, safe too say it was a great experience and the food was lovely, and the man serving us was fantastic with recommendations. I had the meat combo and my girlfriend had a vegetarian dish and both were delicious. Also s good selection of foreign wine and beer too add too the experience.
