Restaurant du Chateau du Haut-Barr

With school, I went on the French exchange to Saverne. My exchange and his family took me to a typical alsace restaurant - Restaurant du Chateau du Haut-Barr. We had already discussed what we were going to eat and if I remember correctly, it was 'Tarte Flambée' and you had to order it in advance. We had about 5 of these tarte flambées' between us and they were delicious! It is essentially bread dough rolled out very thinly with different types of cheses on top, along with onions and lardons. One was with gruyère cheese, one with Munster cheese and the others with creme freche. I tried quite a few tarte flambeés while I was there, but this was the best. We loved the view from this historic site. There are several areas to walk around to. You can almost see 180 degrees around the entire area from the top of this rock formation. Very pretty site to see. Do not go for just the food as the service is not that good. It is a great place to go visit once and knock it off the list.

A fantastic place with an awful service. Not a smile or a care for the customer. We were served by the lady manager. Food and portions were very average for the price. Altogether we experienced a disappointing evening with friends when we were excited to meet up in such a beautiful place. What a shame.

We toured the Chateau and decided to get a cold beer before hiking back to town. We arrived between lunch and supper and felt unwelcome. Perhaps if we came during the main eating scheduled that would have been different.

Old school service: guests are more a nuisance than anything else. The blueberry tart wasn't too bad and the surroundings of course spectacular, but the bar itself is better avoided.
