Saigon is in the center of town, and one of the best dining values in Autun. The dining room is pretty and comfortable, and the restaurant is run by a husband-and-wife team, with the husband running the front of the house and the wife in...the kitchen. The service is brisk, pleasant and efficient, and the food is really good. As Autun does not have much in the way of Asian restaurants, Saigon must do a bit of double duty with Chinese dishes, which it does well. (Have the Cantonese rice with your meal; it has little bits of the delicious sweet and five-spice powder scented Chinese sausage throughout. I have never had a bad dish at Saigon. The striking thing is that most things appear to be cooked to order. One that I come back to often is the beef with onions, which arrives in a sauce and appears to be quite ordinary, but the beef in the dish has just been cooked separately, and it is juicy, tender and medium. Another favorite to start is the nems, the crisp Vietnamese spring roll wrapped in lettuce with fresh mint leaves and then dipped in nuoc mam, a mild, slightly sweet Vietnamese fish sauce. You could be forgiven for making a meal on as many nems as you could eat! Most of the Vietnamese classic dishes are represented on the extensive menu, along with many Chinese and other options, and bargain-priced complete meals can be had for around 15€ at lunch and dinner. Portions are particularly generous, so be careful when ordering. The three-course fixed-price menus are probably as much food as most people can handle...
