Tonking's is one of our favourite little restaurant in RiehenWe we're there only the other night. The food is fabulous covering a good range of Thai,Vietnamese and Chinese. They have the various beers to go with the meal you choose !!There is a real good choice of dishes. One nice feature is you can select dish and then the meat or fish you like. So you can have duck, chicken, pork etcWe had a mix of starters prawn toast, fried wontons and deep fried battered prawns....awesome. Mains were chicken with bamboo shoots and mushroom and the green curry with duck...hot and lovely.The service is friendly and its a nice fresh feel to the restaurant Definitely worth a visit.
The Tonking Restaurant is nicely furnished and right in the center of Riehen close to easy parking. It offers Chinese, Thai and Vietnamese type dishes. The food is quite ok, casual and would be perfectly fine for a nice evening with friends.The service however was awful, it took us about an 40 Minutes until we were allowed to order. We asked 3 times and in the end we could only order drinks and food at the same time, no way to at least get a drink beforehand...Then it took another hour until the food arrived with about another hour waiting time between starter and the main dish.The food is certainly not nice enough to compensate for such long waiting times.
We often go to theTonking for a little hit of Asia and always receive a warm and friendly welcome. While we do have our tried and tested favourite dishes, we also try out some new combinations. It can occasionally take a while for the food to be served, but we take this as a positive sign that the dishes are freshly prepared and to order: the vegetables in our favourite fried rice dish is always fresh and crunchy, so definitely not pre-prepared as suggested by another reviewer.
