Trusted Friends recommended the Holzöfele for excellent food and atmosphere at premium prices. The restaurant tries to offer that and then some. It was the 'then-some' where they came up short.We arrived without reservations and were forced to play the 'we are fully booked, but...' game. We were soon seated in the half-full indoor dining room. No big deal, that is the price you pay for not knowing exactly when you will arrive. The dining room was large, a bit old-fashioned looking, but still near-elegant. Other reviewers commented on the wait staff. We had a cocky waiter who immediately attempted to take charge of us. We ate here one Sunday lunchtime during August 2012. The menu was varied with some regional dishes included. The restaurant was busy and there were numerous waiting staff attending to guest needs. The menus came promptly and the order taken efficently but then things ground to a halt. It took nearly an hour for the food to arrive. Looking around the restaurant we were not the only table to wait this long. Lots of tables were without food! Once the food came we found it to be reasonable value if a little over-priced for the area. Visited for dinner having first tried the guesthouse across the road which was closed. Sat outside under their awning on a warm evening and ordered steak which came cooked to perfection. I always hesitate to recommend restaurants which separately price vegetables as I believe this is a rip off, however, on this occasion the expense was well worth it as the meal was truly fantastic. The local wine on offer was good, although their wine list went from 17.50 Euros up to 168 Euros, which I thought a bit over the top for a rural restaurant. We had a bottle of red costing 19.50 which was very nice. Staff were attentive and friendly which made the evening very pleasant

I always hesitate to recommend restaurants that have been separately priced, as I believe that this is a break, but at this occasion the cost was well worth it, as the meal was really fantastic. the local wine in the offer was good, although their wine card went from euros to euros, which I thought for a rural restaurant a bit over the top. we had a bottle of red that was very nice. the staff was attentive and friendly that made the evening very pleasant
Wonderful restaurant in the Kaiserstuhl, with a nice outside dining area, as well as 'winter-garden' like veranda and cosy inside dining rooms. The meat dishes we had (especially the locally source beef steak in a Whisky sauce) are very good, but the fish eaters in our group were slightly underwhelmed. The restaurant has a good wine list too and the service is efficient and friendly. However, it can get very busy with functions, which may mean you will have to wait a little prior you get what you ordered.

We had a medium good carpaccio, fantastic chicken and a good wine. Our plan was to stay longer for dessert and coffee.But we got tired of waiting and listening to the service.We did not complain, specialfly not when we heard, how it was handled at other tables.Here is great food and wine, some good tables, but lack of service, which was'nt the case 3 days before.

we stopped here for lunch when we drove from Freiburg to colmar. we had no idea what to expect, but the restaurant looked well maintained and so we ordered lunch. holzoefele is specialized in local dishes, with some tears. my wife had the wild herb salad; I had the poisoning. both were very good. recommended!
