If you want good Vietnamese food without being gouged go to San Jose or ask a Vietnamese friend to invite you over to their mother 's home for dinner. Any Vietnamese person when asked where is the best food? , they will always respond at my mother 's house. Not saying this isn 't good but it 's extremely overpriced. Vietnamese food is NOT fancy. It 's street/home food. The film Always Be My Maybe highlights this and so does Anthony Bourdain (the few non-viet who has a deep understanding of the food). Located in the Ferry Building by the Bay, The Slanted Door sets a high standard for Vietnamese cuisine. I've been there several times, and I can't imagine visiting San Francisco without dining here. The ingredients are always fresh and full of flavor. If you're looking for outstanding pho, be sure to go for lunch, as it's not available during dinner service. Every dish I've ordered has been superb. On my first visit, I took my dad, who had never tried Vietnamese food before. The restaurant has a pleasant atmosphere and the food was decent, but I've encountered better Vietnamese cuisine at various other establishments. It's somewhat pricey, especially considering that most of the main dishes are on the smaller side and the quality could use some improvement.
came here with my wife a while ago. I am sorry to see that it is closed. I am hoping that it opens up in the near future. Lots of good memories here and amazing good food. Maybe we will see them open in the coming days. The ambience and location are to die for

The BEST Vietnamese food I have ever had! An elegant setting overlooking the bay. The crispy imperial rolls, the clay pot chicken, and the fresh spring rolls are the BEST!! Also highly recommend the confection for dessert!
Appetizer was awesome. Mains (noodles, carrots, shrimp) were uninspired and overpriced. Staff not very well organized. Nothing to do with Vietnamese, to be honest. Overhyped, overpriced!
