St James's Gate Publick House

We come to St. James Gate every so often. Their food is decent. It's not bad nor is it amazing. It's just kind of OK. Today I went with my parents for lunch and we were the first people to arrive at 11:30. On Google, it says that this is when they open. We were told that the kitchen doesn't open until noon. We waited and a waitress took our order right away. The drinks came out quickly but our entrees took a long time. We ordered bubbles and squeak and two burgers. It took almost a half hour. Let's start with the goods shall we? Great downtown location; nearby parking; extremely friendly staff. My boyfriend and I ordered LA's Crock of Cheese as an appetizer. Our dining mates went with chicken tenders (which I might add, looked like ready-to-eat tenders that had been microwaved). What arrived was an abomination of my tastebuds. If you had showed me a 6 year old was in the kitchen churning out orders, I wouldn't have been surprised. This excuse for a lunchable was the crock of cheese ! I have to say that I was disappointed in this place. I ordered the salmon and risotto and while the salmon was decent the risotto was watery and really bland. It was basically boiled quinoa with some spinach thrown in. I asked the server if I could get roasted vegetables or something instead and he wasn't happy. When the vegetables came out they were essentially boiled carrots and some beans, which didn't feel great but was fine. Then the server gave us our bill and I realized he charged us for the full meal and the vegetables. We decided to stop here for a sit-down bite to eat (we've never gone wrong with any Irish pub in North Jersey before) but I must say, I was very disappointed that I paid $62 to eat here. The food was extremely bland and not something I'd recommend to anyone who's loves a good Pub to eat at. I had the Bangers and Mash and my girlfriend had the Buffalo chicken Mac n cheese, two things that you'd think would be at least decent. I hosted my 4 year olds birthday party here during non peak hours. The theme was Christmas. The Gate's staff made sure we had THE BEST time. We has Santa show up and the owners could not have been nicer and/or more accommodating. They even took a picture with Santa. Thank you all so much for making this party so memorable.

Dined here for lunch, one of the only places open on a Monday afternoon. The decor is dark but comfortable. We sat and were greeted quickly. I ordered a cosmo and appetizers. Everything was good, typical bar food. Our waiter was great too. Would come here again.

A friendly comfortable pub with a broad eclectic variety of beers on tap and very good pub food. Favorites are the St James Burger and the Mussels- always order the chips.
