My husband and I was on visit to Ocean Isle for our 9th anniversary. We Google restaurants and Sugar Shack came up with great reviews. I had never been to a Jamican restaurant, so I was excited when the reviews spoke about how authentic it was. We got there early because many of the reviews talked about it being packed and needing reservations just to get in. We were able to get a table with no problem. Our server was attentive, prompt and even gave recommendations since it was our first visit. My husband got the ribs, which is one of the things they are know for, and I got jerk chicken. I hate to talk negatively about this place because everyone was SOOO nice! The food was actually cooked perfectly (temp wise). Ribs fell right off the bone. BUT... this is a Jamaican place owned and frequented by white retirees. Nothing we ordered had any flavor. The ribs tased like the were boiled in water with some Jamaican seasonings waved over the pot. The wings looked and smelled SO good, yet zero flavor. We actually took the wings home and broiled them with sweet baby ray's jerk sauce. So in conclusion, if you want authentic Jamaican, this is NOT the place. If you have a sensitive digestive system, give them a shot.

This is Jamaican comfort food. If you’ve never had authentic Jamaican food, this is the place. I spend a fair amount of time in Jamaica and the food that Dave puts out is amazing. The sampler app gives you a ton of food and chance to try a lot. The jerk wings are a 10. Smoked, seasoned, and fall off the bone delicious. The jerk pork and curried goat are my favorites. The brown stew chicken and stamp and go and traditional Jamaican eats. The curried rice is my go to side. So happy to have this gem in OIB.

Great dining experience! This was our first time coming here and we’ll definitely be back! I had the jerk chicken…so good! They have the best homemade jerk sauce! My husband had the grilled shrimp and my son had ribs. All 3 of us thoroughly enjoyed our meals! Nice ambiance and great service too. Zack was our server and he was great…very attentive! There is NOTHING Jamaican about this restaurant. The food is definitely not authentic Caribbean! The rice and beans is just regular rice with a FEW red beans in it. They don’t offer ox tails on the regular menu or plantains. The beef patty was not made in house. The brown stewed chicken had no gravy at all. This place was a total fake! Even down to the decor and music!

Good wasn’t like it used to be. Jerk chicken was hardly flavorful. The beef patty was wonderful. Everything we ordered the server suggested was “too much food for two”. Which we thought was odd considering he should be upselling us. We wanted to try a little of everything.

Food was ok. Service not so good. Very rude and charged more than menu listed . They were mad at us because the menu we got outside their door the day we ordered our food, disagreed with what they wanted to charge . We will not be going back .

THE BEST. While on vacation, we eat at least 3 dinners at the 'Shack. This year, we 're aiming for 6... I 'm not kidding. Get reservations!!
