We have gotten to know El Campero from their big restaurant in Barbate… up the road from Zahara. Over the past 6 years we have visited the Zahara ‘tavern’ annually. It can’t really be compared to the original, much smaller in size and while the menu is quite broad, it doesn’t approach the variety of the original. But that shouldn’t pose an issue, as there is a lot to like starting with the raw red tuna. They offer more variety than most in this local specialty, including tartar, sashimi, tataki, and more. The centres a is a must try cut off tuna sushi fans will know it as Toro or Otoro. They also feature quite a few other raw seafood preparations which are prepared with the freshest ingredients and quite simply (in a good way). We like the raw stuff so much that we rarely eat the cooked items, but what we’ve had has been good. The setup is simple: about ten or twelve tables (well, barrels) on the front and side outdoor terrace and a deep dining room inside. The reason for the 3 rating? Send a strong message to our friends at Campero that the service needs work. Even when not busy, the staff all has specialty roles: sitting you, taking your drink order, taking your food order, etc. so alot of staff standing around and talking to each other while you wait for the right person to appear. They’ve got a great name and the reputation is top (just try to get a seat during the summer without a reservation), but get done staff who APPRECIATE the patrons. And if you have the time, do visit their location in Barbate… a temple to seafood!
