Saw this place come up over and over on my Facebook page ... who knows why? Perhaps because I'm an expat from over 30 years ago, perhaps because I visited Zafraans at Darling Harbour. Whatever, they kept coming up so eventually I took a look. And liked what I saw so booked for Sunday lunch. And I wasn't disappointed. The restaurant was really nicely set up - even down to the Union Jack cushions. The walls decorated with some really nice tasteful black and white pictures and with the kitchen at the end allowing some amazing smells to come through, the place looked perfect. They say..how much you travel but you will always long for your home-made food in that journey..the taste that reminds you of your town..the aroma and the delicacies...Such was the case with me while visiting Sydney sometime back..and as an Indian who loves all cuisines but can't get away from his curries...googling around and looking through a few near down places I dropped to The Colonial...and yes..it was like being teleported to my home kitchen in India...Amazing food..great hospitality and yes...its a little India in the heart of Sydney...!! I get this Indian every time I land back in Australia (So every couple of weeks). I use deliverroo to get it to my house and it always arrives within an hot hot and fresh. One of the winning factors is the quality of the chicken in the curries which I struggle to find in Sydney. The vego entrees are also amazing especially the cheese bricks slow cooked in spices. The naan bread is possibly the let down however I know that it often does not hold up after delivery (being in the bag) and it is still quite satisfactory. I'm not changing my traditions anytime soon!
Let's be clear about one thing. This is definitely not an English style curry, despite how it is branded. While the food is decent, it is not exceptional, especially considering the price. Overall, it was a satisfactory meal, but we would not likely return as there are plenty of other curry restaurants that offer the same food at lower prices. The markup of up to 50% is quite ridiculous, to be honest.

We visited this restaurant only because we found a parking spot directly outside. We checked out the $10 special lunch menu which seemed quite good value. The food was great as was the service. In fact I can't think of a better value for money lunch anywhere in Sydney. Oh, and the butter chicken with rice and naan bread was superb!
These youngsters have captured our hearts. The Indian food was excellent and the service was great. Lana, the restaurant host, went above and beyond to make us feel special. The chefs were fantastic! Overall, one of the best dining experiences in Sydney. They truly made our day special! Can't wait to visit the restaurant again!
Table not available at Malabar? Fear not! Awesome authentic Indian food just a walk away. We walked in sceptical but left as converts. Great food & attentive service. The right mix of spices & quality ingredients. We'll be walking past Malabar to the Colonial in future.
We placed our food order, waited an hour for it to be prepared, only to have the order canceled without any explanation. We were extremely disappointed and left hungry.
