We had high hopes of using the Malt and shovel for a 50th birthday celebration (and as it turns out, engagement too We were recommended to book the pub by our air b and b host, reviews online looked good, Vintage inns who own it offer a celebration menu. However, so many things went wrong it 's probably easier to group them by topic! Communication. You can 't book online for more than 6 people. The prices at the time weren 't shown. Took 6 phone calls (4 unanswered , 3 messanger messages and 2 emails to get an answer (even then the email gave the wrong answer . Put this down to a busy pub.... We called on spec as we were on our way to Heathrow this ought to be a great dining experience in an old traditional building at the side of the canal ! Far from it sadly. The Sunday lunch was very poor hard roast potatoes, dry pork belly, dry Turkey, weak tasteless gravy. Our sons burger was ok. We ate inside for almost the entire time we were there, the bar in front of us was crammed with dirty glasses,obviously waiting for the dishwasher to finish. It's not a great look, it's clear that the staff have no real idea about customer experience. Outside looked very tatty, so we were put off from eating there. We 've eaten here numerous times and the standards are slipping. The Malt Shovel is dirty and tired and we were served an Eton Mess with cream that was off. Staff that stink of cigarettes, getting changed in front of us. The waitress that took our order didn 't even write it down, when I joked that she might struggle to remember four people 's orders she just laughed. Anyhow the sauces were wrong with the steak and by the time the correct one came out we were half way through our mains. The 'triple cooked chips ' , undercooked, soggy and not crispy on the outside. The gents toilets were rancid, black mould under all the urinals. Don 't go it 's depressing.

Non existent service, didn’t even acknowledge me. I asked for a table and got grunted at. I asked for a menu and got ignored, twice. I found my own table, waited ten minutes then went to the bar to get a menu. Wait for another ten minutes to have my order taken, nada. The waiters and waitresses walked past me multiple times ignoring me. Walked out after realising I’m that I’m obviously invisible, because there’s no way that they could possibly be that ignorant and rude. Reserva una mesa ahora

We ate here as a family several weeks ago and our server was Ben, who was absolutely amazing. Very helpful and friendly; especially as we had someone in a wheelchair, and a toddler in tow. He accommodated us very well and was very understanding to our needs. We had a nice table by the window and couldn't fault the food. Would return.

We've been fans of this pub for some time now. The quality of food has not changed over the years and remains excellent. The service is also great, with the right balance of checking that everything is ok, without becoming intrusive. Perfect for any occasion, whether it's dinner with the kids or a funeral wake.

Went for games night and it’s a very friendly pub with lovely chatty staff, really accommodating, good choice of beers on tap, all the food I’ve had so far has been grand, will be making this a regular stop for me

Awful service, waiting 1h for mains and another hour for deserts that never came. Sunday roast difficult to chew, both meat and veggies. Pity, this was a good place 5y ago. Never again. Reserva una mesa ahora

Come here every Wednesday evening with my friends and it’s always a great atmosphere, with great food that is promptly served and decently priced.

Lovely location and lovely staff. Extremely dog friendly and a great cocktail selection too. Will definitely be going back
