While The Retreat is quite an enjoyable restaurant, we were expecting more, given its advertising approach and some reviews. This leased out restaurant part of the Wests Bowling Club is a large open room without the atmosphere or intimacy of a quality place. It's very...popular with families and groups. The Italian food was better than average the mussels dish was unusual and looked like a pie, once peeled back revealing a delicious variety of mussel types but the calamari was tough and salt and pepper squid thin. Beef cheeks were tasty. You buy your drinks at the club bar just outside the restaurant area. Interesting to go to see what the hype is about but don't get too excited
We've visited a few times over the last months and have enjoyed some lovely meals. Our most recent visit was less than satisfactory. Surly waitstaff set the tone for the night. We ordered a variety of oysters for entree, one of which was the...size of a fingernail that somehow passed kitchen muster. Sirloin was disguised as a minute steak, thin and chewy. The self-help bar service is cumbersome and time consuming. Delivering water to the table and wine list service would be a great addition. Overall a really unenjoyable experience. They seem to be cutting corners. A real shame. Won't be back
Unpretentious surroundings, friendly wait staff, cheapest drinks for miles, oh and the food great quality and exceptional value. Their homemade Gnocchi ragu is a triumph. Stuffed Zucchini flowers, generous and tasty; pork shank special, a real winner. Pasta and fish options looked great too,...and a lengthy selection of Blackboard Specials. Nearly everything below and Good desserts under and vino at a glass, so you could easily make a night of it here, without waiting for Pay day
I've been here twice now and each time the food has been outstanding! Beautiful Italian food like it's home cooked. Italian chefs. Also a few other styles of food, not just Italian. A fantastic menu and many specials. The dessert menu is all homemade desserts...too. Very generous servings. Lovely staff and very reasonable prices. Highly recommended! We have taken All our family and friends to this place the food is always delicious service is great. I always order from the black board specials. It always different and always a crowd pleaser from young one to grandparents
Not welcoming of families with kids. Pub food. The whole place smells horrible and is inside a bowling club. It’s poor to say the least and I wound not come back. I’m not sure that the majority of the reviews are genuine
This was the find of our short trip to Sydney, the decor was clean bright but the food was at a reasonable price, covering the plate and very tasty. This is the place to go for a good feed
Can be a bit noisy, and the furniture is unassuming, but if you are after delicious, freshly cooked Italian food, this is the place to take the family or friends
