We made a reservation for a party of 14 at this restaurant, but upon arrival, we were greeted by rude and unhelpful staff. We were instructed to put some tables together in a corner, despite having informed them earlier in the day that we would be a large group. We were informed that we could only stay for a short amount of time as they had reservations for other guests, and we were not provided with menus or any kind of service. We were surprised and went to the bar, where we were then told that they did not serve food in the evening, even though we had clearly stated that was our intention.
During the Jazz Festival in Cheltenham, we visited this restaurant and enjoyed a drink in the beer garden on Saturday afternoon. The atmosphere was lovely, so we decided to make a reservation for Sunday lunch. We were thrilled with our decision as it turned out to be possibly the best Sunday lunch we've had in years. The food was beautifully cooked, the service was great, and it was definitely value for money. We highly recommend it.
This place is in a nice quiet area so it’s a shame that it’s filled on Saturday nights with young boys taking drugs in the toilets and starting fights as if it’s a Wetherspoons. You only have to go into the beer garden and see them loitering around the toilets every five minutes, coming out and wiping their noses to know what’s going on.
We have been going to The Retreat on and off for more than 25 years and have never ever found it to be less than excellent, from having 'just ' a glass pf wine through to enjoying lunch (and wine). It is the perfect lunchtime stop when shopping in Cheltenham, well worth the slight detour from the centre.

Awful beer. Awful service. Had a pint of HPA that looked and tasted like dishwater. Went to get a pint of Guinness for pint two instead but couldn’t get the half wits serving to stop talking long enough to get served. **** poor all round. Nothing more to say.
Popped in for a few early evening drinks on a break in Cheltenham, looked quiet from outside but had a nice sun trap beer garden and good selection of drinks. Service was excellent. Didn’t eat but the food looked great
I had a great time trying out some beers at this restaurant, which served as a nice change from the usual pubs along Bath Road. The service was friendly, and the atmosphere was unique compared to traditional pubs.
High quality restaurant food at pub prices. A lovely open kitchen which never fails to deliver. Genuinely Cheltenham hidden gem. Keep up the good work

Great place to go for a quiet afternoon lunch. In the centre of town, in Montpellier on Suffolk Parade, nice rooms, good food, lovely staff…
