The Rose used to be a Fitzroy institution. A proper back-street Fitzroy pub. It was recently remodelled into what looks like a generic, soulless bistro masquerading as a pub, with the same boring line-up of standard beers.Went there to check it out since the revamp, and immediately wished we hadn't. Tacky new tables, and too many high-tables with few proper dining tables. The three meals resulted in two correct orders and one completely incorrect. Sent the third back (a mixed-grill order is not a steak frites order), and waited 15 mins for the third meal to arrive. After 15 mins the first two diners had long since finished their pre-cooked a re-heated, small, bland excuse for a chicken parma...

Went to The Rose today - two weeks after it had reopened after a renovation. I have been going to The Rose for 30 years and today will be my last visit. Although Tom, one of the new owners, assured me that they were trying to keep the 'local' feel they have well and truly missed the mark. Not only have the food prices gone WAY up, the choices have been reduced and the traditional 'bar' food which has always been a staple at The Rose have disappeared all together. Adding a wine bar upstairs with outrageously priced wines (I found one at $450) does not add to the 'local' theme. Oh, and if you buy one of these outrageously priced bottles of wine and want to drink it downstairs you will have to...

The Rose has recently been renovated and is now an open plan bar. That's good for management as it fits in more patrons however it's lost a little ambience. It has a cold feel now the carpet is gone and it's noisy, even though they have put in baffles. It provides good pub food catering to new age kids with organics etc but the basics are still there for the rest of us. Overall, it's still worth a visit providing you like football overpowering the whole bar. When games are over they play the winning theme song at full volume which is annoying. Devastated. Hadn't been to the Rose in two years because moved interstate. Sped through traffic to get there on time for the Sydney GWS game only to be met by wall of hipsters and otherwise empty shell. What a great pub this used to be. You can barely watch the footy any more because some tasteless drongo decided to hang stupid orb lighting from the ceiling that reflects off every screen in the joint. The great footy memorabilia is still there on the walls but it's no longer prominent and looking like it's ready to be shipped out the door. Since the re-furb this pub now has plain boring pub food with very limited selection. The warmth of this pub will be forever lost. How much did they slug Age Epicure for the recent good write up? Definitely cross this one off the list of "My Favorite Pubs in Fitzroy".

Since refurbished this place has a great atmosphere for footy with multiple HD tv's. Food is very good, too and service is great. My only reason I have not given a 5-star is because upstairs is pretty pricy. Other than that - great place and highly recommend!

The Rose had a recent refit that many were worried about. It was just a plain old classic local pub. But, nothing to worry about here. The open plan is much better! Love it, and it's still a classic local. Reserva una mesa ahora

This was a wonderful friendly and cosy pub. It's now so noisy you can't hear yourself think. Been there many times previously but couldn't stay on this occasion. Tragic!

Look it's comfortable and the food's OK. There is a great collection of beers and wines, so it's not a bad place to hang with friend or to watch the footie.
