So, my hunt for a new Indian takeaway continues! After finding out that my regular establishment scored a 0 in the hygiene ratings and was becoming increasingly slow to deliver I began my search with The Spices. Situated relatively close to me, so I shouldn 't face any unreasonably long waits anymore and with a 5* hygiene rating what could go wrong?! Well..... Friday evenings are busy, very busy it would appear but I saw this as a good sign, even whilst on the phone to me the lone man at front of house was answering calls from other hungry locals and apologising for the late arrival of their food. Undeterred, we placed our order and were told of the hour we 'd have to wait. The restaurant wasn 't far so we thought we may as well collect it as it would be ready in half the time and we 'd qualify for a 10% discount. Half an hour later we were outside, starving, and looking forward to our new experience. The take away looked nice and the open kitchen was a lovely touch. Being an amateur cook, I relish the opportunity to see how it 's supposed to be done! The front of house operative was still just as busy , taking further orders with one phone and assuring other customers that their food has left the building on the other. We could see that it hadn 't from the myriad of tickets strewn out on the counter in front of us. We routed through and found ours to find the price and save the 'busiest man in the world ' the effort. We 'd been standing there for 5 mins now and there was still no sign of our host coming off the phone, we had our money ready but weren 't too annoyed as I was transfixed on all the activity in the kitchen. Unfortunately, we never got the chance to taste the food we were so looking forward too after witnessing the chef 's dubious cooking procedures. It would appear that, whilst cooking, if any implement falls onto a dirty floor the general practice is to implement the 10 second rule and return it to the pan and continue stirring the dish! At this point we decided that this place was not for us and promptly cancelled our order. This was the first time 'Mr Busy ' acknowledged our presence and informing us that our food was 'on its way ', a phrase he was very used to issuing, over the phone, without much credence. We told him what we 'd seen and that we weren 't prepared to eat anything that had been on the floor and promptly left. I 'd like to think that the chef concerned would have been made aware of basic hygiene practices before our arrival and reminded of said rules after we left. It 's definitely worrying, that a professional cook would think it 's acceptable to use cooking utensils that have fallen into the floor without so much a a second thought. I probability won 't rely, so heavily, on the hygiene rating now but more on the reviews.

I'm fussy about currys. There's a lot **** places out there where you need a chainsaw to get through the tough dry meat. Everytime I go to a new area I go through about 10 places before I reach the one that does the trick. At times I reach a place that is alright one night but dodgy other nights. For spices we've never had a bad one here and it's our go to place. The open kitchen is comforting and the owner is friendly. They may not have 6 star curry of the year awards plastering the windows but you can always come here and have a good curry with plenty of options. What more would you want?

I have seen adverts claiming that this Indian Takeaway is the best in Croydon. It might just be true. I have to be incredibly careful with what I eat. No adverse reactions with their food. Excellent quality food, and very fairly priced.

Lovely curries, well cooked and delicious. They use vegetable oil instead of ghee so it’s healthier too. My favourite is Sampan Chicken, mmmmm tasty, best takeaway ever
