Nestled in the charming area of Tujunga, you'll discover a fantastic Japanese restaurant called Toriyen. Although the esteemed sushi master, Mr. Kimura, is officially retired, he makes special appearances on Thursdays and Sundays. He has also trained Lawrence and Jojo, who now expertly manage the bar full time. The owner, Mariko, brings a delightful and slightly eccentric charm to the place. I always feel warm and welcomed when I visit. Among my top choices are the Namamono, particularly the live Aoyagi and Aji served with crispy Senbei (deep-fried Aji bones). This place may not be for everyone, but I absolutely love it. The atmosphere here is lively, and you won't have to wait long before you hear a hearty laugh. It's definitely not the spot for a quiet candlelit dinner or upscale fine dining, but if you enjoy good sushi and don’t mind mingling with the local crowd at the small bar, you won’t find a better meal or more enjoyable experience anywhere else. They often offer fantastic specials, like uni sashimi served in its shell and sweet oysters that are "fresh from the Tujunga wash," showcasing selections that are clearly picked from the finest catches of the day. Their motto, "best sushi in the boonies," is truly an understatement.
