Vanxai's Laos Thai Restaurant

Coming from Toronto, I didn 't know what to expect in terms of original Thai cuisine. Fancying mostly restaurants off the Yonge Street area, I was under the impression that I was going to be served ingredients consisting of fresh mango, lemon grass, lettuce wraps, etc. Having visited the Peg and craving some authentic Thai food, my fellow Fudie suggested we try the Lao Thai Restaurant. just got back from the St. Anne's location. The little woman had been there before and said she thought I'd like it. Well, she was right. After entering the purple saloon, we met our hostess/server. Fast friendly service by our 1 server. There were 16 guests in the restaurant over 5 tables. Service was fast and the food was just what we wanted. We wanted to eat some healthy food, with lots of vegetables. We started with the Salad rolls. They used a regular salad mix (reg. lettuce, carrot) for the salad but the sweet and tangy sauce really livened up the 4 large rolls we received for just $6. I 've had to downgrade this place after my last few visits. First off, the consistency of the food has really dropped. One one visit the food was quite salty, specifically my favourite soup in the whole world the gang som gai (Laotion chicken soup essentially). And then the pad thai was too sweet with no real balance in flavours. On another visit recently, for take out I had asked for the dishes to be set at a 4/5 for the level of spiciness well when I got home our dishes tasted like no heat was added at all! Although the decor is just so-so, it is quaint and better than most chinese restaurants. BUT the food more than makes up for it. We've been there twice and let our server/co-owner SOM select our dinner. He is just so excited to help you in any way. Our intention is to go through the entire menu, it is that good. So far I absolutely agree with Dallas H review, the Souk-Gai soup is to die for. A very unassuming and unbelievably great soup. Great Thai food located on St Anne's road north of Fermor and Superstore. We call this 'Purple Thai'. Recommend # 29,32,33,35,36 and 43. So far I've only had #21 soup - Gang Kah which was very good. Heat from 1-5. Service good, quantity and quality very good, excellent value for the $$. You won't leave hungry. A go to Thai lunch in St Vital.

Wandered in here on a dark and stormy night (we seem to be having a lot of them lately) we arrived right before dinner time and found the service and food to hit the spot. Between us we had a green curry soup and a stir fry dish. We will make a trip back some day soon.

The restaurant is small and does not have the best atmosphere but the food is phenomenal. Best Thai food in Winnipeg! Extremely reasonably priced and large portion sizes! $12 will get you a very large dish with rice that can be easily shared between two people.

This is our neighbourhood Thai place and we're lucky to have it so close. My partner-in-crime orders the same thing every time so I am the one they have to wait for while I peruse the menu. The food is consistently great and the staff/owners are very friendly. Reserva una mesa ahora

Excellent food and service. Best Thai I have had in a long time. My favorite is the green curry, and salad rolls : nice little venue with about 36 seats. Definitely coming back.

Amazing Thai food!! I love the environment. Servers are always so kind and efficient. One of the best Thai restaurants in the city!
