On a recent visit to Yarraville I choose the Village Cantina. We were shown to our table and things went downhill from there. It took 10 minutes before we were given a menu, after asking for it. Next we were asked if we would like to order drinks by a second wait person. The first wait person returned eventually, (it was not full) to take our food order and immediately told us that they had run out of Nachos - a staple on the menu. Actually it was corn chips that were unavailable effecting several dishes. The wait person was really not interested, we should have left then. After ordering our meal and waiting another 10 minutes our drinks arrived. I asked for water. Then a patron sitting on the street table began smoking. Due to the windows and door being open the cigarette smoke drifted freely through the restaurant. Eventually our meals arrived, again served by the first disinterested wait person. The food quality has not great and the serves were small. As we finished our water was served. Never again!
It's such a neat little venue and I really love this cuisine but they do it so poorly. The kitchen is clearly running low on the following items:- Salt- Limes- Fresh brown onion- Fresh coriander....all of which you can add to avocado and jalapeños to make a guacamole, with a little olive oil too! I like lists, so here's a few Mexican restaurants that the cooks should check out and get inspired by:- Fonda Mexican, Richmond/CBD- Trippy Taco, Collingwood- Taco Truck, everywhere- Mamasita, CBD- El Chino, Fitzroy NorthGood luck and I hope you get some new recipes!
