On my recent all too short stay in Zurich I was determined to take a cruise on the lake. If your time is limited, as mine was, One of the easiest ways to spend part of it is to take the short round trip. Longer cruises are considerably longer, but this cruise allows you to see the lower portion of the lake, including several communities fairly close up as the boat pulls in to quite a few to pick up and drop off passengers. I arrived in Zurich about 8:30 am, on an overnight flight from the US. Of course I was jet-lagged and knew that if I walked all around the city I'd be exhausted. Especially if you have to wait for your hotel room to be cleaned you've got to do something, and this is a very short tram ride from the rail station, or a not very long and lovely walk along the lake, passing major attractions as you go. I was actually lucky and my room WAS ready, but rather than take what could have become an all too long nap, I decided to stick with my plan, so I walked down the the lake - beautifull lakefront, filled with swans, with great views of the distant mountains on a fairly clear day, as my title indicates. I wanted to get on the boat, sit down and observe others on the boat as well as the villages (suburbs?) that I'd be passing, but more importantly I wanted to breathe in the sea air in hope of refreshment after the long stuffy flight. My plan worked perfectly! I'll admit that towards the end of the cruise I began to feel quite sleepy, but it was easy to shake off with a few deep breaths. One way to fight jet-lag and have a good time while doing it.Even more important to me was the hope that I would glimpse the distant mountains. One of my very best memories of my first trip to Zurich was when I reached the lakeside - as noted it is very pretty in itself but the distant mountains knocked me out. I theorized that on the boat I could get a bit closer to the mountains, and my theory was nearly shot as while the sun was out there were a lot of clouds, and clouds tend to wrap themselves along mountains, thus obscuring the view. But at about two thirds of the way up the lake, there they were, some engulfed in clouds, but many clearly visible. For me my day was made. Admission: I did not eat on this cruise, though of course I could have. When I selected the topics offered by TripAdvisor I chose this, though I could not see the whole title. so the review is about the cruise itself, not the food - sorry if you expected something else, but I warned you in my title.
