Akari Japanese Cuisine

Our group of 4 arrived at 6.30pm on a Friday to a near empty restaurant, though within the hour it was full, and when we left around 8.15pm there was a couple waiting to get a seat. We started with the seaweed salad, vegetable gyoza and the fried tofu with miso sauce which was divine. For mains, 3 of our group thoroughly enjoyed the sashimi. They ordered 2 serves @$19.95 each and it was beautifully presented on one platter. I don't like raw fish and the young waitress had trouble understanding that, and couldn't advise me satisfactorily. She recommended a sushi dish which I pointed out to her that it included raw fish. In the end I had the canned tuna sushi which was nice, but I would have preferred something more authentic. We also shared a tempura dish and tried the udon soup.The food was exceptionally good, though the service needs serious attention. We had even asked another waiter to explain a dish to us and he didn't know what it was! We also had to ask for soup spoons for the soup.We will return as the food was so good, but I'd recommend reading the menu before you arrive so if you need to clarify something, you can google it.

Found this restaurant through an online search of Japanese cuisine in Wollongong. It is conveniently located on Keira St, close to other restaurants, pubs and bars. Authentic and affordable Japanese eats including sushi, sashimi and cooked meats. Cute little set up with friendly staff. Definitely recommend. New favourite sushi place in town. Fresh and tasty, emphasis on the fresh !

What a pleasant surprise to find this authentic Japanese restaurant in Wollongong NSW! Owned by Japanese husband and wife, Akari serves you real Japanese cuisine, from nice fresh sashimi to traditional comfort foods such as takoyaki, a ball-shaped dumplings with minced octopus. BYO wine. Highly recommended.

My first visit and I was not disappointed. The dinning experience was pleasant and the service quite excellent, and very reasonable in price. As a group of 7, we had a range of dishes including those to share, and no one went away hungry. Will be back.

The food was very well presented and fresh as one would expect from a Japanese restaurant. The service though while they seemed to try hard were forgetful and slow. Overall ok nothing wowed me though.
