This is one of the main reasons we keep coming back to France: a few hours driving through pretty and sparsely populated farmland and forests brings you to a small and isolated village. In a hamlet of barely 400 people sits a restaurant that could hold its own in world class cities. Au Gres des Ouches begins its charm with a million euro smile from the gracious hostess. The menus are extensive and there is a clear passion and pride to utilize as many local ingredients as possible. Looking for a Menu Ouvrier, we fell on Au Gres des Ouches and had rather more. A superb meal! Each course was beautifully prepared with signs of originality. All the produce is local and the menu has a list of the local suppliers which was a really nice touch. The bread is made on the premises too. A starter terrine of pigs trotter, lentils de Berry and foie gras, with pimento d'espelette, roquette and red baies, breast of goose with fig, little gem lettuce, endive and very light potato choux. Angus beef with marrow bone was the special of the day. Followed by a cheese course (huge selection) and peach tiramasu, coffee and sweets. We spent a good evening with family, and we were very touched by the decoration of our table for the event and the remoteness that allowed us to spend a good time with our children. We ate very well, the child menu is generous and we enjoyed the welcome but we did not doubt for a single moment. We'll be back with you.
As the title states, an amazingly simple restaurant that's does amazing food with minimum fuss and minimum hassle. A lot of city-based restaurants could learn a thing or two from here. Wide choice of dishes for a small restaurant lost in a small village. Our scallops and our duck breast were good. The desserts were superb and nicely presented. Madame is serving while Monsieur is cooking. Both do a very good job, which keeps them in business in this somewhat remote area.
We visited this restaurant 2 years ago for a great meal and were in the neighbourhood and decided to go for lunch. Great restaurant, super service, smalle menu, but very good and tasty dishes and very nice wine served with it. Excellend place to visit when in the area.
