"A very good restaurant. We had Duck confi and Lamb. Both very good and the Lamb were huge for a person. The waiter was very effectively even that the restaurant was full."

There are two entrances to this marvellous restaurant. You can use the main entrance that leads you directly to the clean but a little old-fashioned looking dining room, or you can chose to enter via a porch, which leads you directly to a pleasant terrace in between two historic buildings and a small river. The kitchen serves mainly regional dishes (or at least inspired from it), but there seem to be an interesting “renovating” factor. I had a game terrine as a starter and pike perch with choucroute. Both dishes were delicious. My wife had a winegrower’s salad (with saveloy and gruyère) which was also very good (and enormous). There is a good choice of wines, but since the restaurant is held (since 1724!) by the Ancel family that also grows wines, we opted for their wine (and we did not regret at all).Staff was very professional and friendly.

We enjoyed a leasurely lunch at this restaurant on a Sunday afternoon. It was very busy and we waited over a local wine for 15 minutes before we could be seated. Wait staff managed to understand our Australian accent and assisted with menu suggestions. We each had two courses including foi grae, schnitzel, quiche, and creme brulee. Each were perfect and when matched with half bottles of local wine we couldn't have been more satisfied. 90 Euros including tip was money very well spent for a couple of hours in heaven. The decor is stunning with passing tourists flitting in for photos.

Sadly the food doesn't really live up to the expectation created by the formal surroundings and high prices. As you can see from the photos accompanying the reviews, the dishes are dainty and decorative but ultimately unsatisfying. If nothing else, the Lion d'Or is at least open on Mondays, when most other restaurants are shut.

Pleasant, easy eating restaurant. Large portions that are good to share, especially their "Tarte Flambee", a great crispy crust with plenty of topping. Do try the kiddneys. All the typical Alsatian dishes are there too. Good place for a late night supper.
