First, we were unable to eat at this restaurant, so this is not a review on the food. I'm sure it is wonderful based on what locals and tourists all say AND the fact that you have to prebook months in advance in order to eat here. We pre booked our reservation several months in advance with the owner via email. He responded promptly to my request and after back and forth emails, we figured out a date and time that worked for us and his restaurant. I then emailed the owner a week or two before our arrival to confirm the reservation. This time, I did not receive a reply. I assumed maybe he was just too busy and forgot to reply to confirm my reservation. On the evening we were supposed to eat here, we drove almost an hour from our hotel to have dinner here. When we arrived, there was no one there and the restaurant was closed. We left a note for the owner with a copy of our email reservations. That evening, I sent the owner another email inquiring as to what happened. We asked kindly if he would fit us in another night during our stay in the Dordogne considering our unfortunate circumstances. Again, he never responded. I'm assuming the owner made a mistake in booking our reservation on a day the restaurant was actually closed, but it would have been helpful to know that when I tried to confirm the reservation before we spent 2 hours of our precious vacation time driving to and from the restaurant. An apology would have sufficed if he couldn't accommodate us another night, but all we received was silence. My recommendation: you must prebook this restaurant several months in advance. Verify the restaurant open days & hours as best you can (I tried to do this and there was conflicting open/close times online at different sources) and be sure your confirm your reservation before going, probably via phone is best, but can be challenging if you don't speak french.

Camping nearby we read the trip adviser reviews for this Auberge and booked well in advance. It didn't disappoint. The menu is seasonal and based on the home grown and killed produce of the area. The meal began with a large jug of home made dandelion wine which our party of six enjoyed. Soup was next made with nettles and a range of veg, delicate and tasty. Then cured ham and boar pate with melon and cornichon, large portion, yum. The main course of duck and pigs cheeks served with bamboo and roast potatoes was delicious. An excellent cheese course, walnut cake served with 5 different syrups flavoured with dandelion, pine needles, berries, etc to finish coffee. Well worth the visit. Finally a word of warning. Don't rely on the map on trip adviser to find this restaurant. It is miles out.

We have a house nearby and have been to Auberge de Layotte several times with friends and family. The menu hardly varies from year to year, and this is both the strength and the weakness of the restaurant. The chef makes everything from scratch, the food is basic traditional local fare, such as good house wives undoubtedly has preserved, pickled and cooked for centuries. Owner/chef is a great host and the al fresco dining in summer is very nice and often very entertaining.

This is a must go to restaurant everything you eat and most of the drinks are grown or killed by the chef, who is a very pleasant host.Five courses or more I lost count but all the food was exceptional a delight to look at and many people photographed the plates of food as they came out.At 35€ I think this great value. Will visit again
