Auberge De L'ecluse

We used to visit this restaurant a lot, we always had good food and service. We haven’t been for a while so were looking forward to the meal. First impressions count, our glasses were dirty, there was lipstick and mouth marks around all of the glasses on the table so we had to get them changed. The amuse bouche arrived and the dishes were badly chipped. The starter was fois gras, the portion size has shrunk and it was a very small sliver of fois gras on the plate! We ordered the Tornedos and normally this is one nice thick slice of steak, instead they had put 2 thin slices on top of each other so it was overcooked, the potatoes had so much nutmeg that it made it unpleasant to eat, it left a lasting taste. Normally a carafe of water is put on the table, not today. We had to ask 4 times for water (trying to get their attention was almost impossible, they have a way of looking past you) and their ice machine had broken down so it wasn’t cold, the ice bucket containing the white wine didn’t have any ice so again warm white wine. It was an extremely hot day hence the need for the cold water. Two older ladies were sitting close by, they struggled to walk as they left the restaurant and the 2 female waitress made jokes about them behind their backs as they left (we speak French) not at all professional and extremely rude. I chose the sorbet for dessert, it stated 3 boules on the menu, I only got 2 but smothered in Chantilly to cover it all up, my husband just wanted ice cream and received 2 small boules of a cheap vanilla ice cream we were charged full price for the menu but it was all sub standard and the staff have really let them down badly.

We were travelling down the nearby canal lateral a la Loire and this restaurant was mentioned in the guidebook. A map search revealed the restaurant is on the banks of the Loire and more than 2km from the actual canal. I rang the restaurant and enquired how we could get there from the boat on the canal. The curt response was to ask if we had bikes on the boat and if so we should ride them! I booked a table in the garden anyway and we arrived exactly on time to find no table was set for us and no sign we were expected. We asked the waitress if we could push 2 tables together to sit facing the river and she refused because they were tables for 2 she said. At 8pm it was clear no one else would be coming so we pressed the point and the maître d’ said that would be fine so they fluffed around for a while setting a table for us but not a great start. The menu and wine list were quite limited and the vegan amongst us was served vegetables in cream sauce. Service was adequate but not great. There were only 2 tables occupied and 2 staff so should have been much better. Some of the dishes were very good others ok. Wouldn’t rush back.

What a beautiful night on the Loire. The weather was perfect so we were sat out on the terrace. The service was attentive and the food was classic and delicious. It came out very quickly too. The waiters were helpful, pointing out specialities of the restaurant. It was a wonderful restaurant. True class on the canal.

we arrive here during ester holiday when most of the restaurants were close. we love the interior and the location of the place. the service was nice and friendly and the food quite good and relatively cheap. we like everything from the amuse bouche to the cakes.

A pleasant atmosphere and beautiful dishes. And not only beautiful but excellent in taste. The outdoor terrace is an excellent place to be and you decide to come back here soon.
