What a true Jen AXKAWA is! The history and cultural tradition this lovely restaurant offers Carbondale is fantastic. We had out of town family visiting and decided to try it since we are new residents and had not gone. The experience begins as you walk in the door, with all of the rich, Hispanic yet modern and minimalist vibe. The owner was our server and she took time to explain the name, and all of the art in the restaurant as well as how the incredible drinks were created. So fun. I anticipated the high prices when I noticed that the menu didn't list any. Paying $60 for two margaritas and four tacos felt steep. The pork was dry, and the toppings were wilted; the tiny tortillas were the only redeeming aspect of the meal. The margaritas were just okay—weak and overly smoky, leaving me with chapped lips from the excessive MSG used on the rim. If you're looking for quality food at a reasonable price in Carbondale, you’d be better off at a bar.
We were there last Sat for Happy Hour. 5 Margaritas, 1 beer, chips salsa and chips guac came to $117. She never presented a bill. There are no prices on the menu. She handed the credit card device to us said, here's the part for the tip. 20% had already been added for a party of 6. DON'T GO THERE! Margaritas were not the best in town; they didn't taste good at all. Confirm the prices before you order. Each Margarita was $15. We'll never go back!
We were able to easily get great outdoor seating for our group of five. The waitstaff was friendly and provided helpful information about the menu options, including allergens, spice levels, and portion sizes. The food was absolutely delicious. Everyone at the table enjoyed their tacos, and I particularly loved my bowl of pozole verde with chicken. It’s an excellent dinner spot!

The server seemed quite clueless, making it hard to believe she could remember how to get to work each day. To top it off, a 20% tip was added to our bill for four people. When I inquired about it, the bartender mentioned, "Some tables automatically include a tip, some don't?" I gave up trying to make sense of that, but I have to say the food was really good.
We had a great experience at Axkawa. Desiree was a fantastic hostess and gave us great suggestions. Drinks were fantastic and food was delicious. Highly recommend!
Sat outside on a beautiful night. Food was great. Had guacamole and ceviche, recommend both. Pasole was also excellent. Quick service. Great causal dinner spot.
Ceviche was delicious and tacos were traditionally small but packed with flavor, I highly recommend the shrimp! Great atmosphere!
