On our first night for a week in Garmisch, we had a reservation for Bei Marcus. We had just completged an all-day Saturday train ride from Interlaken, Switzeerland, via Innsbruck to Garmisch. We were tired but not hungry.We were greeted warmly by Doris, wife of Marcus, and daughter Anne (pronounced AHknee). We were delighted from the start. Bei Marcus offers a warm atmosphere and a simple menu that changes every two days. I have put off writing this review for far too long, but only because I don't want my favourite restaurant to become so busy that I can no longer get a table. I simply love this place and it's a wonderful breath of fresh air in a town that is overfilled with schnitzel and spaetzle. Marcus prepares his menu from scratch daily, depending on whatever is available in the market. He always offers a choice of 3 starters, 3 mains and 3 deserts, but he will create something off the menu upon request. This was a recommendation from the hotel I was staying at. It was walking distance, and even though I had a reservation, it certainly wasn't needed that evening. I found it intriguing that the chalkboard menu had only eight items: three appetizers, three entrées, and two desserts. Rather than limiting your choices, I felt I had a greater choice than with numerous items on another menu. This was a solo trip for me, and at other restaurants, I found myself eating and exiting quickly. The meal at Bei Marcus encouraged me to savor and fully appreciate every bite. Marcus decides his menu in the morning each day. Incredible because that is done so rarely these days. So it is a huge treat to see what he is serving and visiting over the last 10 years or so we have never been disappointed. His bruschetta is legendary which is very often on the menu. During this visit we have had Wiener Schnitzel, Cod, Spaghetti with Beef and some amazing Sauerkraut which was cooked with eggs and cheese. It was just superb! Doris, his wife, is always so friendly and nice. This is one of our favourite restaurants in the world.
The wife and I were able to get a table short notice and we were not disappointed! Very simple menu (3 starters, 3 mains, and 1 dessert), but all were scrumptuous! Menu is only on blackboard in restaurant, depends on what fresh local ingredients are available. Dad is the chef and Mom and/or daughter serve. Very simple but nice wine menu. A real treat and very reasonably priced. Highly recommend.
