A cute place in Berkeley's bougie 4th street area, this place was always busy when I go in the middle of the morning. This 50s style diner is KNOWN for its pancakes (especially the souffle pancake creation). It takes 30 minutes to make and it is a very lively, fun place. The staff is friendly but incredibly busy. The first time I went, my companion and I asked one of the staff about scrap (a tasty, original-mix pork version of hashbrowns. When I ordered that with a vanilla milkshake from the same guy (who is one of the owners, Manfred, Bette's husband, he said he wouldn't give me the milkshake until after my breakfast was served, so I wouldn't spoil my appetite. And then he went for the kind reminder by making my friend Mini Milkshakes all morning. Needless to say, we enjoyed ourselves very much and were very full. Another place that is always busy, they have an excavation bakery next door, and I have ordered to go on a weekday morning. They also have a pancake recipe book and sell their own pancake mix. Did I mention they're known for their pancakes?
