We were visiting Calgary from Nova Scotia. We were staying nearby and noticed the restaurant, Buchanan's. We decided to give it a try. We happened to stop by during Happy Hour Food which is between 3-6PM, you can get one of their 8 oz ground sirloin burgers for $12 (which is half price). We all ordered burger and fries. AMAZING, HUGE, TOP QUALITY!!! Top notch food, top notch service!! Better than anything we have had in Nova Scotia. The waiters were friendly, courteous and amazing! They cook the burgers just as you ask... perfectly!!!!!! YOU MUST VISIT DURING Happy food hour!!!! You will not be disappointed!!!!! The rest of their menu looks fantastic, we will be back again to try other items...
Every Month a group of us go to a different Calgary eatery, we've been doing this for about 5 years, we've had some very good experiences and some not so good. Our dinner at Buchanan's was probably one of our best evenings. The restaurant is very tastefully decorated, the service was excellent and food was great. I had their dinner special which included appetizer, main course and dessert all for a very reasonable price. I've been here a number of times in the past for different industry events and I notice that they have made an effort to adapt their pricing and menu to reflect the current economic situation. We plan to go back with our family and friends
If you are in Alberta, you should be eating steaks, especially if the restaurant is called a chop house! We walked here from the Westin on a Thursday night. A few tables were occupied outside. I don't know why but we were the only diners inside. Our waiter Sean was very attentive and knowledgeable. Filet mignons were great, cooked and served to our order. Don't understand why other reviewers would complain about $29 hamburgers when they could've had a filet mignon for $39. Had wines by the glass and shared apple crumble dessert. Prices were very reasonable, even without the 25% discount for C$ to US$. BTW, there is street parking available in the evening.
Buchanans is one of our favorite restaurants in Calgary. However, during our latest meal there, we experienced the worst service we have had from any restaurant in years. The main course, which the kitchen did its usual excellent job preparing, was served to us barely warm. The service was slow and inattentive. We had to ask the waiter to take our order, and to bring the bill. He haughtily refused to provide separate bills for each of the two couples in our group. This is not the quality of service that we have come to expect from this restaurant. We would like to keep Buchanans on our favorites list, but they have to clean up their service.

I dined at Buchanan's with a group of friends last night and was very impressed. This was my first visit but I will definitely be back. The smoked pork chops I had were beautifully presented and surrounded by seasonal vegetables. The service was outstanding. This is a great place to go with friends…the dining room is quiet enough to actually have a conversation without shouting! There's lots of free parking nearby on the street (after 6) and I felt safe walking back to my car alone.
Business dinner so asked for privacy. Host was very helpful in seating us in a private nook. Staff were respectful and accommodating throughout evening. Special diets accommodated without fuss. Steaks were done perfectly. Lobster and mussels were good; broth was a okay. Disappointments arose from side dishes - onion rings too greasy to eat: veggies over or underdone. Steaks were definitely the prize on the menu and appreciated - so live to reputation as a better chop house.
I went to try the burger as it has gotten quite a bit of recognition. If you go between 3 and 5 p.m., the burger is half-price! Regardless of whether you pay full or half-price, the burger is very tasty. The meat is a high quality beef that you can taste and they cook it the way you like it. All the toppings were very tasty and the bun didn't disappoint. The bartender knew his scotch and was very helpful. The sticky toffee pudding was good. I will go back again.
This looks like a neighborhood pub and whiskey bar, but it is so much more. The whiskey choices are immense and the menu leaves you wanting more than one.I had the Hong Kong wings with the lobster scallops. I recommend both. Just outside the downtown core, this place is worth the walk.

For $ 27, one would expect a hamburger to be omg good. It's ordinarily mediocre. And small. And overcooked. And nigh tasteless. The best reason to go to Buchanan are the whiskeys. There are too many to drink in a lifetime. The food... is a different story.
Food and service are excellent. Portions are large, so come hungry. Reservations a necessity. Like dining in a "club atmosphere".
