Cafe Du Chasseur

We were taken here by our lovely gite hosts M and Mme Stauffer, who know all the best addresses in the Val de Ville! The Cafe du Chasseur is at the top of the village, which has an interesting patrimony...most of its old houses are still standing and the cafe displays fascinating photos of the village today and a hundred years ago. We were there on a rainy Thursday night, so no terrace for us! The owner (a former teacher who inherited the business from his mother) cooks absolutely superb flammekueche in a wood oven...these are an Alsatian speciality, with bacon, cream and onion baked on a super-thin and crispy pastry base. He is renowned for them locally. Don't be put off by the plain decor and simple ambiance! He and his wife are very hospitable and the setting at the head of the valley is magnificent. We've eaten flammekueche many times but never like this...and the dessert version, with apples, cinnamon and a tot of calvados, is gorgeous too.

We found this restaurant more or less by accident (tip for the owners: it is not on Google Maps currently), and were greeted very friendly by the owner. The traditional Flammkuchen was delicious, and more than enough for a good meal. Recommended!
