I've been to Chang in Grünwald and in Solln a few times now. I went to Grünwald for lunch with a friend I had invited. We had a not so pleasant experience and I'm sorry I chose this place to go to for Asian food. The food is average and the price is -too- high. But most of all, the service is rather unpleasant. One waiter was very nice and friendly, but the other two were outright unfriendly, almost rude. I'm not a regular there; this restaurant was suggested by friends as an option for a dinner out, but I will from now on definitely propose a different restaurant to go to. And I shall explain to them why! The vegetables in the Thai curry were very undercooked -practically raw- and most had to be put aside, especially the beans. We pointed this out to the waiter -when we finally managed to draw his attention in a rather empty reseaurant- and the answer was: this is how the Thai always cook it! We said to him that that's not the case, Thai people don't eat raw beans, but he insisted, telling us that he lives with a Thai partner. I have lived in Thailand many years and never had to eat raw beans, which I told him. He then left our table and never came back again. Paying took very long; the nice waiter brought us the bill and then we had to wait 15 minutes for someone to pick up my credit card. We were not in a hurry, otherwise we would of course not have waited so long! The nice waiter appologized when he saw us out and Mr. Chang, who had been sitting there with local guests all the time, said: "Auf Wiedersehen", but we were not offered any compensation for the inedible veggies in the curry! No coffee on the house or something of the sort. But why should they; raw veggies are the norm, apparently, so the waiter told us. I called Mr. Chang afterwards, and he apologized for the vegetables and the long wait to pay and he told me to ring him in advance of our next visit. But there will not be a next visit; there is a Vietnamese take-away not too far away that serves good food for a good price and that does not leave an unpleasant feeling after a visit there. Chang prefers regulars who are willing to pay a high price for average Asian food because it's at Chang's in Grünwald and who get a better service, I would hope for them.

This restaurant is a notch above your typical germanized Thai. Polite staff serve up dishes from an extensive, populist menu of thai and japanese favorites that embraces salads, soups, stir fries, curries, grilled fishes and steaks, noodles and sushi. Their standout include their red and green curries either with chicken, beef or fish, Pla Bai Tong or marinated seabass filet wrapped in banana leaf and served with red curry or their grilled lobster and U.S. rib-eye steak which are the hallmark of their cuisine. The lunch menu is tweaked occasionally but perennial favorites such as red and green curries are always on the menu.Overall, the food was fabulous and service was friendly and swift.

Mr Chang did not have an easy job to surprise the upscale Gruenwald crowd with his culinary endeavor. Now in it´s 5th year he is an established figure that also caters to partys and private homes. We love the Sushi, however try the weekly Chef´s recommendation for a sensation of freshness in fish and meat. It is a real benchmark for a lot of other restaurant when you start comparing freshness. Best time to spend a lunch or dinner may be on a warm day at the terrace, since the indoor facilities are loved or hated as the taste of design ( red leather chairs ) is once individual opinion. when you are into sushi you have to try the rock´n roll style ( served warm ) and the teriyaki beaf.

We we're quite disappointed in the service level and lack of attention to our table. The food arrived on time however one of dishes was cold and the portion small. It was returned (not gladly, however typical German attitude.) Both dinners were well presented and tasted quite good. For us the tables are a bit crowded together. I would recommend trying it out if you must eat in the local area, however don't expect the same levels as the few other upper end Thai restaurants in Munich.
