First off, I am glad this shop is in the neighborhood, comforted knowing there's a decent sushi place nearby. It is located in the back of the van Aken Marketplace, toward the indoor parking garage. There are a few tables in the shop, but the Marketplace offers plenty of options to sit and watch people. You'll get a buzzer that alerts when the food is ready to be picked up. The pace at the shop can vary, which sometimes affects prep time, but the quality of the food is consistently excellent. I immediately noticed this when I took a bite of the rice; it had the perfect flavor and texture, with just the right amount of give. This applies to both the rolls and the yakitori dishes. We have vegetarians in our group, and the tofu yakitori dish was a pleasant surprise. I don't usually eat much tofu, but this was the best I've ever had, perfectly balanced in flavor. The staff there are friendly, which is a plus, but the food is extremely inconsistent and only mediocre at best. I ordered avocado sushi twice; the first time it was rolled, but the second time it was just avocado placed on top of rice. Both times, the avocado was quite brown, and one piece was so overripe that it was inedible. They also shut down their fryer early but didn't inform us until we arrived to pick up our order, so we couldn't change our request. As a vegetarian, it's rare to find a sushi restaurant that offers more than just one option, which is typically a lackluster choice. However, Domo is a delightful exception! They provided a fantastic variety of options, all of which sounded equally delicious. I chose the mushroom sushi, and it was exceptional! The flavors were perfectly balanced, with the subtle sweetness of the mushrooms and sautéed onions complementing the tanginess of the pickled vegetables. I can't wait to return and try the other dishes!
I was really looking forward to having a sushi place near my new home, but this experience was the worst I've ever had. The rice was undercooked and ended up in the trash. All the other restaurants at Van Aken are fantastic. We also tried the yakitori, and it was just as disappointing as the sushi. If you're in the mood for Asian cuisine at Van Aken, I highly recommend checking out the rice shop instead.
Really bad experience of yakitori. They set my food aside and didn’t call me to pick up until 30min later I asked them where is my food. I was sitting in front of them all the time. After I asked, they give me the box which I saw it sitting on bench the entire time. Yakitori was already cold like a hard stone.
I used to visit this restaurant frequently because the sushi is quite good. However, there are three reasons why I no longer go there: 1. The takeaway prices have become overly expensive. 2. Pros: The menu at this location appeared to have a limited selection of tempura dishes, but the chef kindly offered to prepare a special Dragon roll for me, which was quite tasty. The dining area was spacious, and the staff were friendly. Cons: However, I found that there wasn't enough eel sauce on the roll.
