Great food in a charming restaurant! I've not generally been impressed by Swiss cuisine, but Cafe Gothard is an exception. We went with two versions of the traditional roesti; the Gruerien and the Valaisan, both of which were excellent. The Valasian, with tomatoes and raclette cheese was a bit more plain, but the tomatoes really helped cut the richness of the cheese and buttery potatoes. That said, I preferred the Gruerien since it comes with speck (bacon lardons) and onions, but without the tomatoes to cut it, the richness is strong. The restaurant itself isn't huge, so reservations or eating early are advisable. Service was friendly, but this seems to be a predominately French-speaking tow...
The fondue was excellent and the atmosphere is lovely. The server with a brassy blonde Bob made sure there was no nuts in the bread or crackers we were given. My problem was when our server changed to a tall woman with short brown hair. I told our server I had a nut allergy (multiple times in French and she confirmed she understood) she said okay and then did not bother to check with the kitchen if my dessert had nuts, she just told me it didn’t. The dessert DID have nuts and if I hadn’t have noticed this, I could have died because her lack of care and unprofessionalism. This restaurant is NOT SAFE for allergy sufferers. Wonderfully “rustic” restaurant with a lot of tradition and a certain flair. The fondues are second to none, the portions are perfectly sized and come with bread and potatoes. First of all, a hearty amuse-bouche. The chicken and pork sausage are also exceptionally tasty. Even when the house was full, the service remained confident and gave our children some sweets at the end. Would love to come back.
Dieses Café Restaurant ist eine Institution! Man sollte sich einen Besuch in diesem traditionsträchtigen Ort nicht entgehen lassen. Wir sind per Zufall hier hingelangt da an Pfingstmontag sonst alles zu hat. Die Ambience ist atemberaubend und das Essen ein Gedicht. Ich hatte eines der besten Fondues in meinem Leben! Very nice restaurant. Very friendly and very competent welcome. I ate snails and it was very good! The fries were unfortunately not as good... I was just a little surprised when one of the waitresses came to tell me: good cholesterol feels good! ... It was certainly not malicious but it was not. not one thing to say to a restaurant customer! Otherwise really good
Better make a reservation, otherwise tough to get in on prime night/times. Truely Swiss regional cuisine and character, centrally located in Fribourg. Lovely and competent wait staff, understood about GF need so made necessary modifications for an enjoyable meal and evening. Some amazing artwork installed within as well.
