Friendly service. Food came out fast. But don't go close to closing time. The white rice was on the hard side abd not sticky, tho you get a big beautiful portion. We got the beef curry and the pork cutlet curry. The beef in curry was tender, which was good. And nice big chunks, also good..but..some pieces had large fatty bits. The pork cutlet dish was served with curry on the side, and I loved the red crunchy condiment (ginger?? ...I take stars off because there was only half a shrimp in the tempura, the tempura appetizer was greasy, looked like the shrimp was sliced down the center the size of a straw. The other stars off for the fatty bits in the beef and off for the curry itself...while i...
Iconic San Gabriel Japanese soul food. Always busy but worth the wait. Everything is made from scratch. Curry is made from a family recipe and the broth for the ramen is exceptional. I've seen families walk through saying they love it as well because there's something for everyone of all ages. In a small restaurant you wouldn't expect their drink selection but they have about 7 or 8 unique Japanese beers and Sake! Definitely food for the soul in every way. Kid-friendliness: Kid friendly but also kids love the food. I've seen a toddler non-verbally argue with their dad because they were still eating. In the group of 10, 6 were kids and they seemed very happy.
Having lived in Japan for a year, this place brings back the vibes and the atmosphere of eating at a Japanese restaurant. The moment I walked in, the decor, the smell, the vibe, the only thing missing was the size (Japanese restaurants tend to be incredibly small because land is a luxury there. The food was good, I was not expecting amazing blow your mind food that's not what this place is, but it tasted familiar, it tasted like the place I called home for a whole year. It tasted like that town I used to live, the town by the ocean. I definitely recommend you try this place, if you are feeling nostalgic for Japan.
I ordered the pork katsu curry. The taste is fine but for the price, I felt it wasn’t worth it at $16.95. This is by far the most heavily battered pork katsu I have ever had and I’ve had pork katsu in Japan, Taiwan, and the States. The batter to protein ratio felt disproportionate to me. If I had to go back here, I definitely won’t be ordering anything fried. The restaurant atmosphere was cute and cozy at least. Service was okay but the waitress got one of our orders wrong. A nice Japanese family restaurant. There were not many customers at noon on a Thursday, and the food was served quickly. We ordered three set meals, the pork cutlet rice and tempura (shrimp and vegetables) were both good, and the cold buckwheat noodles and udon with special sauce were even better. However, the cold noodles and udon set meals also come with rice, so there are a bit too many staple dishes, so I’ll try to spread out a little more next time.
I ordered two servings of katsu don, a shrimp tempura, and some Japanese fried chicken pieces. The food tasted really good and the portions were generous. Everything was crispy and flavorful. It’s perfect for a relaxing dinner. The only downside is that it was a bit hot inside of restaurant, possibly because the air conditioning wasn’t strong enough or due to the semi-open kitchen. Overall, it was a nice experience, and I will come again!
I have never been able to figure out the schedule at Duck's. It seems like they open when and only if they feel like it. But this is the best place in L.A. County for Japanese Curry and Donburi Matsuri in Pasadena and Kouraku in Little Tokyo $15 parking?! tie with a close second for Donburi . It's a 45 minute drive from my house, but it's worth it. Nothing else to be said.
Basic classics for Japanese staples. Enjoyed my cold soba noodles and tempura. Chicken cutlet and curry not bad but next time I'll try the spicier version and unagi, this was bland. Gyozas are too deep fried for my liking, Lotta extra batter. Reserva una mesa ahora
