As you can read in previous reviews: no menu but chalk board, food based to share, unique interior,...What's important (for us):- for this price I would at least expect a table cloth in stead of the sticky wooden surface- beer selection is poor and wine is overpriced (maybe because I'm European?)- food is very good and made with only local ingredients according to the waitress when I asked for pepper to put on my oysters. She brought me an American/Canadian sauce (first try was an empty bottle) which was quite spicy but did not really fit the oysters. For dessert we took the cheese board where we found several foreign (= not local) cheeses... Conclusion: We love alternative/different/not mai...

Had dinner with a colleague at Field Guide while on business in Halifax. Found the restaurant to be most interesting, and while some dishes were only good, some of them were spectacularly good. The restaurant is a casual small place with an open kitchen, focusing on small dishes to be shared among diners. The menu references different cuisines from around the world but has roots in local ingredients. There is much to choose from and the menu changes over time, but we had at least charcuterie, smelts, duck tacos, pork carnitas tacos and gnocchi. The food overall was very good, but the duck tacos were out of this world. The gnocchi was also solid and the smelts were very good, but the pork carn...

Three of us went for drinks on a Friday night, and tried a variety of the cocktails. There seemed to be one person doing all the drink mixing, so our orders took a while each time. The atmosphere is cool, if a bit dark (literally dark, as in it's hard to see the menu), and the space is small but well thought out. We didn't order food, but were sat at the bar and could watch the prep and presentation - everything looked and smelled great. The bar stools aren't made for lengthy visits, though they looked cool, and after a couple of hours, we were ready to head elsewhere. Our one 'off' note was that the male bartender (his gender was memorable because everybody else on staff was female) wanted...

From the outside, this was not what I was expecting as the exterior was rather "office" like and dull but the food choices were anything but. The menu was designed to be shared. The various dishes were posted on chalkboard (we were told there was a basic selection and then the others changed as local ingredients came in or went out of season). The portions were just enough. We had flank steak with fresh mozza, deviled egg with smoked trout, fiddleheads with a cream sauce, and pork carnita tacos. The egg and trout was delicious. The fiddleheads were wonderfully fresh and the cream sauce required an order of the outstanding house sourdough to soak up every drop. The steak we found undercooked...

We have visited field guide for a variety of occasions, including celebrating our engagement. It is without a doubt one of our favourite spots in the city for a quiet bite to eat or a celebratory night out with cocktails. The service is always excellent whether sitting at the bar or a table. We very much enjoy their Sunday $15 off bottle of wine (previously Monday), and the wide variety of choices. The food is always great and we love seeing what they come up with each time we visit. You cannot get bored visiting Field Guide as they are always coming up with new dishes, it is a great place to try new dishes you wouldn't normally choose.

As a big city person, I was worried about my food options, but stumbled upon this lovely restaurant. The decor was cool and servers friendly. Food was yummy and kept eating and eating...the drinks were excellent as well! I would totally recommend this. It's off the beaten Downtown path, but not really far. Perhaps a ten or fifteen minute walk from the hockey arena downtown or Citadel.

Everything from the squash and smelt salad, to the beef tartare, to the cornish hen, to the donair bao buns...outstanding Everything was seasoned perfectly...the apple cake was beyond, homemade candybar no words. The ambiance is cool with recycled industrial metals, and woods. and Ceilidh the owner is amazing!

This is a fantastic restaurant if you're interested in local food. They offer a variey of dishes to share and some of those were amongst the best I've tasted. This is a place for grown-ups who enjoy their food (kids might struggle to find something to their liking). I hope to return.

Really first rate. Foodies will be satisfied. We had duck tacos, pork belly with beans, and the gnocchie. Every dish was well thought out - absolutely fantastic. This is about 10 levels above your usual bar food - well worth the price. The service was also charming :)
