With high vaccination rates and zero Covid cases in the North Vancouver Island zone, it is now fairly safe to venture out to eat, sans masks. Recently we were invited out for lunch and chose the Filberg outdoor cafe. It is now under a new...chef and kitchen team, bringing with them a new anticipated menu. Seating is outdoors, metre distancing, in one way out to the park the other, etc. The chef has lifted the menu considerably, with local ingredients, and fresh dressings. This is what most better restaurants have been doing for the past decade. No burgers and fries here. This is a nice change. Went with a group. First we were instructed to take a menu and the waiter/waitress would come. Then we learned from another customer that we had to order inside. Scones in the glass case were mislabeled, one order was served on another type of bread...than the menu had stated and we were told this is what it was, soup was put outside through a window onto a table with no instructions to us that this was the case, coffee and tea were self-service which we had to figure out for ourselves (not the safest as this involved reaching over things), the wait staff seemed uninformed (very new staff Overall, for a restaurant that normally receives many customers during the summer months, things were no...
Aug Sunday Arriving at the Filberg head to the far end of the estate and that’s where you’ll find the Summer Kitchen. You help yourself to a menu and select your table. After you’ve decided what you would like to eat, you pop...inside the kitchen to place your order. I chose the ham and cheese bagel and she selected the grilled cheese sandwich. There was more delicious ham not bologna ham than I expected, unfortunately I couldn’t taste the aged cheese. She was disappointed with her grilled cheese sandwich which looked wimpy limp, not crisp. The location of the Kitchen is wonderful, but I can’t say the same for the meal. It’s not the worst lunch I’ve had...it was ok.
We really enjoyed our brunch at this now called Summer Kitchen. Casual and inexpensive. Daily soup this day was cream of mushroom which was delicious. Salad was average. It was nice that my husband was able to get his breakfast at They didn't have...eggs benedict he wanted but we were told they will start serving it shortly. Very confusing and disorganized. This is the third season for this operator but staff do not know what is on the menu, self-service is awkward, hot water for tea is an accident waiting to happen and the food is boring. I could only recommend this...place for an afternoon glass of wine. Too bad because the setting is magnificent.
