I've NEVER left a bad review, but the other day at Gingerboy it was a disaster. Reserved a table via Open Table for a birthday occasion. When we showed up, was told that no booking existed (even though I had email and mobile confirmations because the system doesn't link with the restaurant. Waited 30 mins, finally they placed us upstairs but the top floor had total lack of service and managed by the most slow paced downbeat bartender (perhaps the lack of staff upstairs forcing him to serve is making him hate his job? Worst menu explanation too, sounded almost like he has never dined in the restaurant. Guests were getting annoyed with the attitude and no service, we complained and luckily was...
The bar staff were good and really creative with cocktails made based on what flavours you liked. Did not disappoint. Starter and Entree were delicious really really tasty, however let down by the main. We ordered the Wagyu Beef Rendang and expected a thick, unctuous rendang where the meat had been cooked basting in for several hours however it was simply wagyu beef (which was nice) with a rendang sauce poured over it. A bit dissapointing and wouldn't eat again. Dessert was nice. Service was great, and excellent selection of wine.
The food was okay but as Asian flavour fans, we were a bit disappointed nothing 'wowed ' us. We went early, 6.30pm Saturday night, expecting it to be quiet, but there was a significant pre show element as it is near a theatre, so it was full. As there are many tables, that means crowded and busy busy. We prefer a tad quieter and less squashy. The best part was the service, which was attentive and thoughtful, definitely above average. The offer to create a banquet with your tastes in mind, is a great idea.
Our group of 6 friends thoroughly enjoyed our booking for The Melbourne Food Wine Restaurant Express lunch. Food was delicious . Wine was excellent also. Two of the group had dietary issues which were handled discreetly by the waiting staff. Staff friendly,welcoming attentive to our needs. We all agreed that we would come back to Gingerboy again.

Special occasion. 80th birthday. Food was brilliant. Staff wonderful. We have never had a bad night at Gingerboy ... or even an average night. It is always brilliant.
Food is great I have been here 6 or 7 times now when I’m in Melbourne. Not a huge fan of the beer selection, but otherwise everything is great!
Magnificent food very expsensive... $300 plus per couple, but worth it on very special occasions.
Bold tastes and attentive service always make this a great dining experience
