I really enjoyed the sashimi at Hoshi Ya, but the maki rolls were just okay. After reading all the positive reviews, I decided to give this place a try. The delivery took about an hour, but I was okay with that. I ordered the sashimi combo entree, negi-hama maki, volcano maki, and torched white tuna maki. The sashimi combo came with a box of rice and a big container of miso soup. The miso soup was a bit bland, but the fish in the combo was fresh and delicious. I recently ordered takeout from Hoshi Ya and took advantage of their great cash deal: any two rolls from a select list for $12, which includes a side of miso soup. We chose a spicy salmon maki and a crazy maki. The spicy salmon had thick pieces of salmon, tempura crumbs, and spicy mayo in a rice roll, while the crazy maki featured shrimp tempura and avocado in a rice and seaweed combination. So happy I found my new favorite sushi place. I go to school nearby, but live North of Boston, so I've tried a few places. When I tell you....I never order spicy tuna because sometimes the texture is off and it can taste like you're eating a spoonful of mayo...well, not anymore!!! I was craving sushi so I decided to give this spot a try. It was good and they're open late as well. I'm not sure of the promotion, but I think if you order 3 rolls, you get a choice of edamame or seaweed salad. I chose seaweed salad. I ordered California maki, spider maki, and the hoshi ya maki. Spider and hoshi ya were both pretty good, Cali was pretty basic. Next time, I would request extra soy sauce. Would definitely come back. My favorite sushi spot in Oak Square. It's nothing crazy special tbh but it always just simply fresh and good. Best reliable, affordable sushi place. I like how they keep the salmon in a big piece in their spicy salmon rolls. And their rice is flavorful and just right. The black capillary is also a good specialty roll. They do cash deals. I wouldn't say I love their sides, so I recommend stick with sushi, edamame, and miso. Definitely not a sit down spot, get it to go.
Absolutely a hole-in-the-wall place by the very definition of the word. Hoshi Ya is primarily a take-out joint, but they have 4 seats inside and you'll receive great service and a personable experience with the chefs. The sushi is affordable and fresh.Some bad sushi has a very obvious taste that's not present here. The menu is diverse and you'll surely find anything you're inthe mood for.
