I am currently on a personal search for great teriyaki, alas I regret to say that we did not enjoy the so called "best teriyaki". We ordered a variety off the menu. The entrees of tomago - which was by far the best dish out of all,was excellent, salmon nigiri fresh & well executed but the gyoza was average. Mains consisted of chicken teriyaki which had perfectly cooked vegetables but was distinctly lacking flavour. The Ika Niniku Yaki -grilled squid, with light soy & garlic sauce was tender but very mild in flavour ,again, the vegetables were perfectly cooked. Overall, having tried a few of the neighbouring Sushi & Japanese restaurants, I thought it was expensive & disappointing. I regretful...

We were craving Japanese and found this gem near our hotel. With plain decor, fast service this isn't a dining experience for a special event but this is how the Japanese really do eat out. Japanese dine out frequently in plain restaurants and food is fast. So if you're looking for an elegant experience you won't find it here but service is great and authentic and food is pretty good. The sushi is delicious! We had a soba noodle stir fry which to me tasted more Chinese but I'm no expert. I had a tonkatsu bowl which was yum. Next time I'd order differently and get more sushi and try something different but we were satisfied and had a good Japanese fix.

This seems to be a Chinese or Korean knock off of a Japanese restaurant. The waitress's blank look when I asked for the bento box should have been a warning. The "lunch box" had the items you'd find in a Japanese bento box, but cooked and served haphazardly. Tempura was just "fried stuff" and agedashi tofu, which in the best hands is a delicate mix of tastes and textures was here just fried and bland.Sushi was ordinary. Not bad, but nothing I'd go back for.Australia has great fresh food, and amazing fish. At this price point you can eat much better and more accurately prepared Japanese food in Melbourne.

We chose to eat at Japonica on a busy Friday night when we just couldn't face a noisy crowded restaurant. Japonica was not busy, so we had no problem being seated at 7:30pm on a Friday. Staff were helpful and attentive. The restaurant feels like a lunch venue with plastic sleeved menus and non-themed tables and seating. However the menu offered all our favourites and the food came in good time, in large portions. The price was reasonable for dinner, but would be expensive for lunch, in my opinion.I'd eat here again for a no fuss, quick fix dinner option. Reserva una mesa ahora

A group of friends ate here tonight. We shared most dishes and were reasonably happy with what we were served. The sushi-sashimi plate was good, edamame beans ok but needed more salt; fried tofu pleasant enough; a cooked eggplant dish was well received. Reasonably priced wine and sake. I'd imagine this would be a reliable local neighborhood cafe but its not a place one would frequent for high quality Japanese food and service. Simple decor, pleasant service.

Japonica seems to have been around forever and is always the same - very reliable, good food, good service and a nice atmosphere. As it is also close to lots of public transport options, it is ideal for those living nearby or travellers. It is both licensed and BYO which gives you lots of options.

One of the joys of travelling or new places is finding the places that the locals go and if you want quality Japanese (not just sushi) in South Yarra then Jimmy and the team at Japonica are the best. A Japanese master chef hiding out in a local retail strip its just perfect.

I always enjoy a Japanese restaurant more when it has more traditional decor. This place is nice with a good menu and reasonable prices. My only criticism is the sea food dishes come with that terrible fake pink crab stick imitation meat. Other than that, lovely!! Reserva una mesa ahora

I always love Japanese food. The sushi is so tasty and fresh. it is quite different from other sushi store, one of the chef's special 'soft shell crab roll ' is fabulous The waitresses are so friendly and the service is quite nice here.
