La Madrague is slightly off the beaten track, but it's worth the extra few minutes stroll along the harbour from the epicentre of Valras Plage. This also means that it has less of the feel of a brash holiday/tourist restaurant and more the atmosphere of a stylish local's institution. The interior is cool and airy ceiling fans, bleached wood, neutrals and whites. No fishing nets and glass balls stapled to the ceiling here. Not an orange wall, plastic mermaid or fluorescent bulb in sight. Yay! We hadn't booked (and we were, in fact, tourists) so were placed on the outer edge of the room. A really mixed experience, that fell well short of our expectations in a number of ways. Our visit with 2 young grand-children was on a Saturday evening without a reservation but we were given a nice table inside. An excellent menu was on offer and the owner, a very pleasant gentleman, offered the Children the Menu Enfant, as they preferred a Pizza, we all opted for the A la Carte and we placed our order for drinks that included a bottle of Picpoul de Pinet, which came with the usual complimentary bottle of water. We've been there for the 3rd time. Food was great. But the service wasn't. We think they prefer french guests and they will be served faster.... We booked a table for 7:30 pm cause we have to be ready to take the Lily Passeur, a ferry boat to come back in direction to our camp site. The starters were served very quickly and were also excellent. Then some of us got their main dishes. But the other 4 of our group of eight had to wait much longer... We arrived to pay at 9:40 pm with much pressure... So finally we had an excellent dinner and reached the ferry but have been served caotically ...
I was here last year with a big group and we were looked after very well and the food was fantastic. We returned again this year and still as good, the grilled oysters were unbelievable, and the sole was cooked to perfection.
