Located less than 5 minutes from Les Grottes de Niaux, this lovely family run hostelry was a great spot to stop for lunch while we waited for our tour of the Grottes. Every dish was superb, including Blanquette de Veau, a typically local dish of pork stew and a cassoulet (duck, sausage and pork belly) to die for. If this restaurant has 1 failing it was the lack of a vegetarian option on the menu however the host very kindly offered to prepare an off menu salad, which was fantastic. Location was very pretty with a beautiful indoor area and a large patio area. Our hosts were extremely friendly and welcoming, offering us local guidebooks. You won’t be disappointed if you stop here for a pre or post Grottes lunch.
Nice food at reasonable prices, but organization and service could improve. We were given a table by chance (there were available at the moment) although I had a reservation one week in advance!! So the very pictoresque waiter just did not take any note of our reservation; in France you risk eating ina McDonalds or not eating at all if you miss your table…also we had to request the kids’ icecreams, even though they were included in their menu. On the other hand, food was good.
We had a great lunch in their lovely outdoor dining area. The three course menu was excellent, but I had the special, their house made cassoulet, which was superb. Perfectly cooked beans, confit of duck and sausages, it was one of the best cassoulets I've ever had, and I've had a lot. My wife had the menu, with the pate, a roasted fish and a great mousse au chocolate. All washed down with delicious local white. Formidable!
We were staying for one night at La petite auberge, so we also had diner at the location. What a great choice! We opted for the 3 course menu, so we got to try appetizers, main and dessert. All the food was excellent and we were only sorry we could not eat more. Very friendly service and a great atmosphere in a quiet green garden. Highly recommended if you are in the area.
