Friends said they were taking me to a midday meal "en pleine nature". Well, it was a beautiful Saturday, perfect for a picnic in the warm sun, but it was rather a trip to a gem of a restaurant in the countryside outside of the village of Le Thor. The colorful and well tended garden and a selection of farm animals kept diners' kids happily occupied. The 25€ menu was a bargain in many senses; it included an aperitif with tapenade and toasts, a choice between a pair of entrèes du jour, a choice between two plats du jour with vegetables, a cheese plate, a choice between a pair of desserts du jour, and café. We all loved the limited choices, especially since it was evident that the kitchen had been able to create high quality dishes with fresh local produce - and the impeccable service must have been partly the result of a calm kitchen. We found an excellent bottle of 2011 Côtes du Rhône produced in nearby Châteauneuf de Gadagne, 14€. It made us feel honored, believe it or not, that the proprietor had seen fit to pass on to us a really decent price for a fine bottle. We are already plotting a return trip to La Table Paysanne.
