Le Cochon Bleu is located on the right-hand side of Lectoure's main street going downhill from the cathedral. It has a very small terrace with a couple of tables, whilst inside there is eating for about 12-14 diners. The peculiarity of the Cochon Bleu is that tt is also a bookshop, one wall of the dining room being a multi-level display of distinctively French literary works. The lunchtime menu is pleasantly simple. There is a dish of the day which, on this occasion was a chicken leg cooked in a cream and wine sauce and accompanied by basmati rice and a green salad, for the modest price of € 13. If the day's pecial does not seduce you, then there is a choice of 3 dishes à la carte. The first is that Gascon staple, duck breast, but this time served in bite-sized chunks on slivers of toast and accompanied by rice and salad. Alternatively, one can choose grilled pork or a baked camembert cheese which is served with fingers of bread to be dipped into the molten cheese. There is a good selection of local wines which are more than adequate for enjoyment with the freshly-prepared food. Desserts include home-made tarts; our choice was between a walnut and apple tart and a raspberry tart, both excellent. Service is efficient and friendly and the prices very modest in return for a wholesome, tasty and highly satisfying meal. Tables seem to be occupied quite swiftly at lunchtime, so a reservation is recommended in order to avoid disappointment.

Walking the main street of charming Lectoure in Gers on a sunny Autumn Sunday, a friend and I decided to have a very French café-crème in this tearoom turned bookshop ! Pretty place with an attractive cultural environment ! Unfortunately, the owners of this place might know a lot about literature and food but they know nothing about hospitality. Not a greeeting when we entered the place and placed our order, we were very rudely asked to move to a smaller table as only 4 of us (my friend and 2 other customers with a baby in a pushchair were sitting on a table for 6 (nobody else around at 11.15 in the morning, quite early for lunch service though ! . Making a comment when our coffees were served, the man owner took them very wrong (how dare we criticize his place ? , eventually took the beverages back and greeted us with a finger up as we were leaving the room.. Tiredness at the end of a busy Summer season does not explain it all ! Maybe he is a little less rude with his regulars, but outsiders don 't seem to be welcome. My English friend was shocked and myself as a French citizen, totally ashamed ! What an image to give to foreigners visiting our beautiful country ! Fortunately for us, a few miles further down our road, in Marsolan (small village with gorgeous architecture btw , we found a very good café-crème, served by a friendly smiling lady ! It saved our morning !

While we were in Lectoure for a few days, we became very attached to the Cochon Bleu, returning several times for breakfasts and lunches with some of our grown up children. The food was good and fresh and the the patrons, Laëtitia and Richard, were lovely and thoughtful. The coffee and fresh squeezed juice was much better than the hotel we were staying in and Richard was very knowledgeable and took great pride in his sections of wines, some of which were from local vineyards. The restaurant was also run as a library and bookshop, with children's books and comics to the French classics. The Cochon Bleu added much to our enjoyment of Lectoure.

Cold welcome. I asked for a glass of rose. I was told coldly: we don't have the license. We only serve soft. No hello, thank you, smile... I crossed the street where I was well received. Too bad the place is very beautiful
