Le Grill de la Gartempe

I an confused! Am I in the same restaurant as those who gave a 5 star review?This town is sadly lacking interest and life. There are TWO restaurants, both caught in a time warp. Other than these two, you will only find take out pizza, kebab and creperies. The two waiters are wearing old, tattered garbadine outfits from the sixties, are sullen and depressing.You are seated inside in the middle of summer because their outdoor yard area is reserved for fries and burgers - out of the same kitchen.The food is depressing. All covered in brown gravy. The fillet mignonette consisted of four thin and overcooked slices of something that might originate as beef. The view from the steaming dining room? Overlooking a shallow unremarkable river - if you can spot it through window that have not been cleaned this decade. Very depressing restaurant in a sad forgotten small town.

My wife has a 6th sense when it comes to food, she just knows it when after a simple door, there cooks a good chef. The same here, in this lovely little town, forgotten or given up by Capitalism, but with lively little corners and surviving humans. The cook, he cooks, but serves his client as well, and with a good-hearted and fine humor à la francaise. He offers plates and combinations we never thaught of, but enjoyed very much. His choice of wines is good, I especially enjoyed a Poitou white Sauvignon, 12€ the bottle. For me, this grape is acid, as in Reims (thus used for champagne), but here, in the South-West, this grape gives off its full potential. The surroundings in the house are extremely simple and straightforward, but the view on the bridge and the river is charming and gives the mind peace. We immediatly knew: this place is called "come back".

Here I had a succulent steak with a good half-bottle of Cahors Malbec wine. The service was friendly and efficient. Overlooking the Gartempe river it is pleasantly situated but would benefit from an outside seating area that ironically it much more basic adjacent The Grill operates from the same kitchen.

This is a cool little place with a unique interiorEach table has concert ticket stubs of bands from the 60s and up, under the glass.

This is a cool place if you're into any kind of rock music of the past 40 years.
