Dear ProprietorOn Sunday 14th August 2016 you shouted profanities at me while my husband paid €10 for two drinks you would not allow us to drink. Why? Because our first impressions of your business were so poor that having booked a table for 2 for Sunday lunch we decided we did not want to order lunch and instead asked the waitress to bring us the bill for the two drinks we had ordered. When asked by the waitress why we did not want to order lunch we indicated two reasons (i) that the dining room had a bad smell and (ii) that the menu was unappealing with no choice and a huge price (€35 for three courses in this area is 2 to 3 times the price of your competitors). We have eaten here many times during its rather varied management history.I reviewed it in January16 just before it closed and so it should have done as it was hopeless. I learned it had reopened a little while ago and so finally revisited it last night with the expectation of a good meal. We have always dined here as our treat on holiday. We saw from the website that it had reopened with new owners but there were no sample menu on website. We booked for lunch and under previous ownership there used to be set lunch for about 18 euros. When we arrived it was half hour into lunch service and the place was empty. As it was extremely hot it was suggested we eat in side. The restaurant was dark and dingy. We ordered some drinks and the menu was provided. Just had a superb lunch at the Chateau in Chalais. The food was magnificent. It was well presented, amazing flavours and delicious. We had a warm welcome from the new owner and chef when we arrived. The waiter did his job very well, was friendly and courteous.Would have given 5 stars BUT......We were shown to a table for 11 when I had booked for 9. The owner would have known this if he had not been so eager to practise his French instead of listening.I ordered the set menu for 40 Euros along with a 4 others but the poor waiter had to firstly come back and say that there were no langoustines which was the starter and then no veal which was the main course. If your a UK citizen you will immediately recognise the tv show Faulty Towers . Well this restaurant wins hands down when it comes to a farcical excuse for a restaurant in rural France or rural anywhere . Not only did they forget what was ordered but they were unable to provide any changes THEY suggested . After three attempts by the kitchen to supply any of THEIR alternatives dishes excuse was the Chef was being problematic and was finishing his contract after one week) . Unfortunately this establishment is existing on the merits of its previous 2022 owners . The setting is lovely and the service excellent. Everything was beautifully presented and there were lots of extras. So why only 3 stars? Firstly, for the price there should be more than one option for the starter and desert courses. Salad for a starter, albeit fancy, is not very special. A very dark chocolate mousse for desert would not be to everyone's taste not mine anyway. We went previously in May and the menu seemed more or less the same. To attract locals, and with so little choice it really needs to change frequently doesn't the chef get bored?
Like several recently added criticisms, I must agree with the comments. Whereas for many years this was a superb restaurant where the food and service was excellent, it is, now, overvalued and has ideas above its station. No wonder there were so few people dining there (in August) at midday. We were aghast at the price of the cheapest menu - where there was no choice. The wine list is equally ostentatious. Living near the Bordeaux/Bergerac area we are not unfamiliar with restaurant wine lists. We left the restaurant feeling rather ripped off.
So I wrote a review in July 2018 saying it was lovely food but lacked ambience. Well I am delighted to say having eaten there last night that it is a really lovely experience. The ambience is perfect, the service is seamless and the food is creative and delicious. Attention to detail is excellent, I thoroughly recommend it. Helene B. Reserva una mesa ahora
