We arrived with a couple of hours to spare and lunched at Creperie de Tilluel (7026 Rue Principale La Palud-sur-Verdon, Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur) Introduce yourself to Mustafa. He is a phenomenon. Make sure to view the collage of photos of him with His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Richard Geer and a couple of other spiritual dignitaries. Load up on the buckwheaty goodness of his plate-sized gallets. All you have to do is make eye contact and you’re off to the races with this self-described “former Algerian, first-muslim now buddhist crepe master in France.” Like the great jewish Catskill tummlers, he is waiter, owner, master of ceremonies and main act all in one.Palud-sur-Verdon doesn’t draw the tourist crowds like Castellane or Mustiers. Palud is for gritty, raunchy climbers and paddlers. And for people like Olivier, our AirBnB host. He told us the area is a tucked-away ‘60s holdover that never gentrified. I guess you’d need a car to get to Olivier’s (sharing the gorge-road on a bike doesn’t seem plausible.) His ‘gite’ just outside of town looks like a converted stone goat-herder’s hut. From inside it is the AirBnB find-of-the-century with alpine-chalet views looking out thick stone window frames, wood timber beams and a closet full of down comforters and pillows.
