I am going to start this review by saying, this was my second time at the Lingnan. The first time we had ordered off the menu and it was very good. This time, not so much.It was Mother's Day and we called for reservations. The earliest they could get us in was 7:30 PM. We had a busy day, so that actually fit into a day pretty well. We were seated in the back of the restaurant, which is just painted cinder block walls. No ambience at all. The waiter was funny and efficient. Top marks to him.We were told that if we wanted to order off the menu it was going to take a long time, and they suggested we give the buffet a workout. We weren't too hard to convince. The buffet had very poor selection....
I want to review this place for a long time. The Lingnan is practically an institution in Edmonton. I have fond memories of this restaurant - it was one of my Grandfather's favourite spots - he would take us here when he visited - that was in the 70's and I was a kid. Saturday April 8, 2017 attended with my family for supper. We usually eat here once a year or so. It's in a funny spot - dead end Street North of downtown - now you look at Roger's place to the South which is an improvement from the old RR tracks. We ordered spring rolls and 3 dishes - the cashew chicken, Szechwan beef and the special chowmein. Service is always good. Our waiter kept topping up our wine glasses. Water boys kept...
Trip advisor rarely let's us down, but they did with this place. The food was stereotypical Chinese restaurant completely westernized to cater to old white grandparents (and that's the only people that were eating inside at the time we picked up our food). The decor (looked like it hadn't been updated since the 70's would have been awesome if the food was awesome, but again it just reminded me of a place that was made to look like a Chinese restaurant to cater to old white people). Food was average at best, price as average. If you're looking for some sub-par Chinese food, here you go.
Had a set menu option for two. Big mistake. Worst 'Chinese food ' I have ever not eaten. The resto is a cavernous dingy hole with wait staff in silly Oriental outfits. The service was glacially slow. The food was appalling and virtually inedible. I know this place is renowned and popular with Edmontonians - perhaps they have never eaten good Mandarin or Szechuan - Lingnan seems to living on an undeserved reputation. Won't be going back ever. Doesn't even rate 1 circle on TA.

This place has been in Edmonton for 70 years. The building on the outside doesn't look like too much but once you go inside you will be amazed. Very clean and elegant. The staff are friendly and helpful. The food is excellent. We have always had the smorg. There isn't a whole lot but it is kept fresh and you will get filled up. The price is also reasonable and kids and seniors get a discount. The smorg includes wonton soup and dessert.
Went for a company Christmas party, and it was terrible.Overpriced, mall food court Chinese food. If you like that stuff, eat your "Chinese food" at the mall for a fraction of the price.The icing on this frozen cake, was when they brought out the fried rice and it obviously had frozen mixed vegetables from a bag in it. Unacceptable for a restaurant.
May not be the best in the city but it's a great reliable family run restaurant. We order the same thing every time and are never disappointed. Eating in will mean you might wait a while for a table or food to come on a Friday/Saturday night. This is typical American style Chinese food that meets the basic needs of a chicken ball and spring roll.
The food is very good, hot and served politely. Our questions were answered with clarity and precision. The shrimp with creamy peaches is absolutely delicious! The owner and family are very considerate and helpful, being attentive but not intrusive. We highly recommend this beautiful restaurant and return with every visit to Edmonton.

After spending 9 years looking for quality Chinese food in Alberta, we finally came across Lingnan! Thank goodness, we were starting to lose hope of ever finding anything close to the taste of what we were used to back home. :)Good location for sports fans, as you can walk right over from the new stadium.
Excellent dinner with long time friends at Lingnan. Our friends had not been there for some time but were impressed by the continued good quality food and great service. Our friends would definitely come back to this restaurant
